Cockapoo! Very active outdoors but pretty relaxed indoors. So sweet and fun. Big dog attitude in a small package. Mine don't shed at all.

+1, dog from a foster home. From your post, you are looking for an adult dog who has calmed down a bit. Because the dog is an adult, you will know it's size, whether it's good with kids, etc. It might be housebroken.

Dogs are individuals, there is no breed that universally doesn't bark much.

Beagles don’t bark, but they do howl. A lot. At least the ones I knew did. They’re cute, but it made
Me never want a beagle.

Beagles bark. A lot. A LOT. And they shed a lot too (their fur is known as "glitter" in the beagle community). I love mine so much though.

Havanese - but you can’t tell if a dog will be a barker until you get them home. Mine is 10 and he doesn’t bark as much as he did when he was a puppy. He’s become a more selective barker as he gets older: ups, mailman, certain dogs.

Toy poodle - doesn't shed, very sweet and snuggly, doesn't need long walks or lots of exercise. Mine is basically a lap dog. Also the poos are tiny (this is important). Would be fine in an apartment.

You can train it not to bark too much. Get a girl dog if you can, they are sweeter.

I agree. You definitely want an older dog, with a calm temperament.

But even an older dog will need daily walks for exercise.

Beagle owner here. If someone is home full time with the dog, there should be no howling. Beagles howl to find the pack.

Love them but their tolerance for kids varies pretty widely.

+1. I am stupidly in love with our Cavapoo. She is smart and lazy and looks like a teddy bear and *great* with the kids.

A pug would be perfect, except they shed. They are very quiet. They do not require much evercise. They look a like a small bull dog, so they too fussy of a dog. They aren't yappy ... I would never want a happy, small dog. They have some attitude (they think they are a big dog)

meant "yappy"

This! It doesn’t sound like a dog is actually right for you, OP. Yes, your kids want one. But I don’t think YOU do. You’re going to be miserable.

From OPs description, have to agree. FYI cats can be leashed train and trained to do tricks/fetch etc so still could be quite fun for your kids. They definitely don't bark.

Havanese! Spunky and active but a lap dog most of the time. Great with kids. No shedding. Not too barky. Super cute.

lagotto romagnolo. Great family dog. We have one in a small house. He has plenty of energy for the kids but very gentle and chills out with the adults. Hypoallergenic
