Does anyone else follow the Skalla sisters on Instagram?

Rachel Skalla Parcell (@rachparcell), Emily Skalla Jackson (@emilyjackson), Meg Skalla Huntsaker (@meglskalla), and Amy Skalla. They are a group of Mormon Utah sisters who are big time influencers (which millions of followers).

I was raised as an atheist in a big East Coast city so their whole world is interesting to me. They do a pretty good job of making Mormonism attractive to outsiders: the wealth, the attractiveness, the big family that spends all their time together, the close knit bonds with other Mormons in the community. It seems really nice. What has been of interest to me particularly is how protected and sheltered to be by their parents and now their husbands. I think my parents loved me and cared about me but it seems different for secular people. I was never seen as some precious jewel to be nurtured, kwim? I would have scoffed at this when I was younger and wanted the freedom to do whatever I wanted, which I did enjoy for a long time. But as I get older, it seems more appealing than what I and many of my friends have going on in the secular world, which is that we are totally on our own and responsible for not only bringing home the bacon but then frying it up as well.

If you follow them, what do you think of them?

I don’t follow this group specifically, but other Mormon influencers. It’s all smoke and mirrors. Everything is happy happy kind kind cult kind. It’s very similar to Scientology.

Gross. No.

The wealth is a fantasy. Utah has huge amounts of welfare fraud.

Also Utah has huge rates of antidepressants, the highest in the country. Everyone is happy and they have the pills to make it happen.

I follow other Mormon influencers. If you grow up that way, you wouldn't scoff at it but just expect it. To be honest, I find it far more attractive as an option now that I am older and single again.

I did not know about these people so I just checked them out. The only account that appealed to me was the first one. I generally like acounts with pretty homes, design, architecture and flowers though. My favorite account is The Fox Group....also in Utah.

In general it seems that mormons take good care of themselves and do thing to make themselves attractive and I appreciate that. They seem like family people and have good morals.

How do people with lots of kids have these pristine, minimalist homes? Do they just take pictures of certain corners. I don't understand these empty kitchens.

These aren’t candid shots. Everything is staged so the areas that pictures are being taken are cleaned beforehand.

I always wonder this too! And these people all have 4 or 5 or more kids too! Yet everything is perfect looking.

How are you getting all of that just from their Insta accounts?

OP, have you watched Emily try to sell a product? She can barely string together a coherent sentence. All 4 of them have limited vocabularies and sound like elementary school kids. There world is extremely insular.

Yes, the tight-knit family seems envious. But Momma Skalla is as bad as Kris Kardashian; she's super toxic to the point of being cruel to the girls when it comes to appearances and their public personas. They know very little of the world outside of their perordanied life.

OP here. I got a lot of it by how they all talked about Meg's wedding last fall. It was very much - father handing daughter over to husband. Which in theory sounds gross and bad but in practice, they had a way of making it seem very appealing online.

They're the architects building Emily's new home.

OP here. Yeah I find Emily to be pretty boring and Momma Skalla to be overbearing. The only one I really like is Rachel, who does seem to really enjoy her family and to appreciate her surroundings (the house, the view, etc.).

I know who they are but I don't follow them. After being astounded by the houses, I found them to be pretty boring. Their every day life is very provincial. None of them seem to have much going on besides building these gigantic houses. Plus I find their interior décor to be very gaudy and too busy. The older girls need to learn how to edit a room. You don't need every shelf to be chock full of stuff like a store.

Shilling Amazon or showing your woo-woo work out class every day? I'll pass.
