| Is it just my neighborhood (Glover Park)? Today half the street decided to take their cars out and put a reserve marker in their space (deck chair, etc.). Sure, we all had to dig our cars out, but that just seems completely un-neighborly to me. And surely it's got to be illegal ... ? |
| It's quite common in other cities like New York and Boston. I have to say, with this amount of snow, I'd be tempted to do the same if I lived in the city. |
| I just read that it is illegal!!! |
OP here - but I guess even parking inspectors can't do anything about it. I'm tempted to just move one of the chairs out of the way ... |
| I would definitely move them -- how rude and ridiculous. |
|
I, for one, don't believe for a second that OP has actually dug out her own vehicle from 20 + 20 inches of snow ("sure, we all had to dig our cars out").
If you actually had done this, you wouldn't be wondering "what's with" the saved spots. |
| What is un-neighborly is taking a parking spot that someone spent hours in the cold digging out. |
OP here. Eh? I was exactly the same as all my neighbors. My DH and I had to dig exactly the same amount as the people on our street. We took our car out for a drive (it was parked in front of our house) and when we returned someone was in our spot. No big deal - it's a public street - we'll just park somewhere else. But most of the spots had markers. Yes, we dug out the 30+ inches like everyone else here. What's with your snarky comment?? And as a PP has noted - it IS illegal. |
| I would move a marker but then wonder what would happen to my car!!!!!! |

Wish more people knew this ....

Me too. Maybe I'll just walk around my neighborhood moving markers and allowing others to park there . . . |
Agreed. Sorry, but if I dug out the spot, I deserve to park there. If you got home from work at 11pm, and couldn't find a parking spot, would you feel differently? I don't trust others to leave my spot alone, and I need a place to park. |
OP here. No I wouldn't feel differently. Because it's not 'my' spot. It's public property. It's part of living in a city. |

My BIL was complaining today....
he lives in Shirlington and dug out his cars. He did not leave a marker to save his spot and someone took his, oh well it is a public spot ...... and the person had the GALL to put a marker in the spot that my BIL dug out. Could you imagine? My BIL is in law-enforcement and works crazy hours (and has a gun). |
OP here. That's unbelievable!! I hope your BIL sees the guy do it next time and slaps a fine on him!! |
