"Is this a problem because this area usually doesn't get this much snow? So it's basically those from places where they get a lot of snow and follow unwritten street parking rules vs others who see this as every-person-for-themselves public parking?"
Basically. It must be must worse here, with the number of entitled/spoiled/coddled/wanna bes. Some days, I wonder if we are in a third world country with the "haves" vs. the "have nots" (as mentioned). Some days, the withouts seem so frustrated, it's like they are endangering others with their acting out. It comes thorough in their driving (including parking) "entitlement". See the other thread about spaces! People would rather pick their nose then actually proceed from point A to point B. "I'll teach THAT guy in the nice car to wait for ME!" WTF? Is that rational behavior? The good news is, the guy in the nice car is getting a million things done at once while enjoying his first break all day! But how does the "entitled" ever hope to achieve anything further then their miserable attitude? Clearly, it gets them very little in life. And they are too stupid to even realize. How much time do these people have on their hands? No wonder they feel worthless. In "Every person for themselves" D.C., there are very few that learn quick. |
| Poster from South Philly, go ahead, move that chair, I dare you. You'll quickly find out why old ladies don't get mugged around here. |
If the snow melts, then does that mean people can't mark their spots anymore? What's the threshold? OP made a point, though - she (or her DH) DID do their share in the shoveling, so taking another spot shouldn't be a factor. |
| I am pregnant woman with two little kids, DH away. My BIL came over and dug me out....my gratitude is deep and forever. You can bet I guard that spot with my life...woe to the person who parks there. I will happily accept tickets for keeping that spot...I need it! And everyone else who spent hour upon hour digging deserves theirs. And anyone who doesn't get that should move out to a cul-de-sac in MD or VA. We do not need your kind in the city... |
Dial down the crazy just a notch. I don't even have a car in DC. I'm just telling you how it was where I've lived before here. |
? OT, but they do (get mugged around here). |
Ha ha! I was thinking the exact same thing! I bet there's a psychological test for two types of people - those who mark out their territory and those who take the good with the bad and don't feel so entitled! |
Oh, stop, you're no testimony to virtue yourself. |
Public parking is a privilege, not a right. As it have been repeatedly pointed out, people do not own the spaces on a public street, therefore there is no stealing involved. |
| if you're so scared of having your parking spot stolen why get your car out anyway? |
| If you want your own space that is guaranteed where you want it, when you want, then you should pay for that privilege, either by paying for a garage space or buying a home that includes parking. That's just the way it works. |

Okay, there's some truth to this one. The primitive ones are a little f*cked in humanity, I would think. |
| This practice will resolve itself in the next few days. People will start moving the chairs, and the "owners" of the spots will then feel entitled to park in another spot, because after all, they already shoveled out one spot. It will start a domino effect until no one feels psychologically tied to a single spot anymore. |
I don't really know that I want to mimic the behaviors of people from Cleveland or Pittsburgh . . . not exactly high class people. Boston maybe, but not the other two. |
|
Okay, wait a minute, someone in D.C. judging class? Seriously? |
