What's with reserving car spaces with chairs/cones/bins today ... ?

The way things are right now on our street, there really is not much parking available except for those cars whose owners live on our street. It's not like people have been digging out additional spaces just for fun. Having said this, I have no idea what a person is to do when they have to park in a neighborhood other than their own. I suppose they will be forced to "steal" a spot from someone, right? Oh, and I had never before seen "markers", but they make sense to me. Sorry OP (and others)!

You're not supposed to drive after abdominal surgery, right? And I bet most of us on DCUM have 2 small kids - no biggie. If you don't want to run the risk of losing your spot, don't move your car.

Ok this is the funniest thing EVER . . . just watched the garbage collector come through the neighborhood. Most people put trash out in bins, but some just put bags out. Apparently the garbage man thought the spare chairs and cones were trash, because he collected everything!! He must have put about 9 lawn chairs into his truck this morning.

Drat that post-baby bladder, I laughed so hard I peed myself.

Exactly. This should end the debate.

As for all the people with boo hoo stories who try to reserve spaces: Deal with it. It doesn't give you a right to stake a spot that you won't be using for a period of time while you and your priestly car are away. If you really want to keep the spot, do zipcar or take a cab.

OP here. Brilliant, PP. I so hope that happens on my street!!

Nobody on these boards has the room to look down on others (from cities you can't even spell, for God's sake).

The funniest thing on this boards is D.C. people judging others. You're kidding, right?

WOW! Which jurisdiction do you live in that has city services operating on Presidents Day? It's not DC. Trash pick up is suspended today in DC

It's probably a private company. Mine picked up our trash today (thank God! We had so much trash built up from when they couldn't come) but it's a private company. Probably paid for by the HOA.

All together now - it's not "our space in front" - it's public freakin' parking. Why is that so difficult to understand?

8:30 here - yeah, I'm in Fairfax county. We live in an HOA and we have a private company that does the trash and recycling. It is kind of nice - they come every Monday and Thursday, except for Thanksgiving and if Christmas happens to be on a Monday or Thursday. Otherwise they pick up all holidays.

We had garbage pick up on Saturday and despite cleaning the snow all week, the men were so professional ("Of course, we have to come out. Everyone's garbage has piled up all week!")

Why do all these people with HOAs, which suggests suburbs, which in turn suggests driveways and attached garages ... have people parking in the street / saving spaces with chairs? One would think the latter is an urban thing, not a Fairfax thing.

Put another way, why would you move all the way out to Fairfax County only to have to park in the street and dig your car out?

Don't people out there keep multiple cars, some hulking giants of which might be too big for their garages? Personally, I think it's just the NoVa adaptation of the trashy Southern cars parked on the front lawn thing, transposed to fit the realities of "townhouse" tract communal space.
