Ivy league engineering

DS is dead-set on attending an Ivy league school, but is also only interested in engineering. Based on my research, the strength of the engineering program follows roughly this order:

Cornell
Columbia/Princeton
Harvard
Yale
Dartmouth
Brown

Realistically we think he can only get into Cornell or Dartmouth. While Cornell may have the strongest program, in his situation he would likely lean toward Dartmouth because Dartmouth would still like a real ivy to him and he wouldn't feel insecure about attending Cornell which many think is not a "real" ivy. Would be be shooting himself in the foot by going to Dartmouth over Cornell for engineering?

It's more about a sense of accomplishment. He's worked very hard and feels he deserves better than Cornell. It's unfortunate they have a very strong engineering program but that he feels very little interest in the school aside from loosely being acknowledged as an Ivy school.

This is insanity. He needs to go talk with some real engineers and get his head screwed on straight. If he really wants to be an engineer he needs to be more analytical about his approach to college admissions.

Would suggest you both do more research and be open to other schools at this point. Large state schools have top programs—Michigan, Texas, Wisconsin, GA Tech, Cal, UCLA. On the private side, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Cal Tech, Leigh, etc. There are a lot out there if he truly wants to pursue engineering.

Yep. There is definitely something wrong with you and your son. If you had even researched schools, you would know that all the ivies are so different from each other. To only apply to schools because they are ivies is complete stupidity. He feels he deserves better than Cornell???? The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. So I can imagine you feel the same too.

Hey is this another thread where we get to tell a parent what a stupid asshole their kid is? Awesome, love those! They are very helpful and really build self-esteem.

Jesus H. Christ on a cracker, pick colleges you like and apply and go to the one that accepts you that you like best. As long as they are ABET and have the intended engineering discipline you'll be fine.
