| Just so that your son is prepared: Cornell is made up of 7 undergrad colleges and each are independent with respect to admissions. The College of Engineering, for males, has around a 6% admittance rate. |
Cornell is. Apparently #9 on USNWR undergraduate engineering (for whatever that ranking is worth) https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering-doctorate |
Kid sounds pretty unsophisticated. |

Our DS is the opposite.. High stats on paper (in the 75th percentile or above at all the ivies) but doesn't want to apply to because of the low admit rates.
Cornell was on his list but we talked him out of it given the cold, desolate location and Cornell's reputation for being a tough program with grade deflation. My personal opinion is that his outcomes would be better if he went to any ivy or other top private (any one). How long will he remain a hands-on engineer anyways? |
Exactly my worry. A rigorous program but viewed as being the "lowest" ivy |
Viewed by whom? No one who matters. |
I don't think that will affect outcomes. I'd be more worried about rigor and grade deflation.. |
+1000 no way in hell I’d pay $320k for this kid’s education |
And they are relentless, also. |
Yes. Most definitely. Dumb move to pick Dartmouth over Cornell for Engineering. |
He deserves better? Talk about being entitled. I tell my kids that no one deserves anything in life. |
I promise you and your DS that Cornell grads are not suffering professionally due the lack of prestige of their school. But this whole post *has* to be a troll. Who on earth knows they want to be an engineer, cares a ridiculous amount about prestige, and doesn't include MIT, Stanford, and CalTech on their list?! |
| Are you sure he can handle Cornell? I know a super star kid from the DC area who started this year at Cornell Engineering. He is getting his ass kicked. His words, not mine. He said it feels 50x harder than his HS which is a well regarded public HS in the DC area. |
Guess he should have worked harder so he could get into a “better” school. |
| Is he in Cornell and Dartmouth yet? Cornell admit is around 13%; however, it all depends on the program. Their hotel program might be 24%. But their engineering is much lower. Your kid might not make it in. |
