Eagle Scout rank as a hook for admissions

Interesting article:

In short, it won’t make up for a weak package or poor scores. But it can help push an applicant over the edge, given the multi year commitment required to attain the rank.

Excellent article that features specific feedback from 17 universities. Now that Scouting is co-Ed, it will be great to see girls attaining the Eagle rank (the first cohort were granted this year).

DH hired someone over all the others b/c the guy was an Eagle Scout. There were a ton of applicants, but that ranking, honor, good character, etc. stood out. To this date, he is one of the best employees too.

It certainly helped DS get in: UVA, Georgia Tech, Purdue, etc.

How do you know?
Because GPA and test scores were low for UVA. Also, every Eagle in his troop got in.

Yes, and it is more than just building fires and tying knots. A good troop will be boy/girl led: they plan the meetings/campouts/etc. and gain very tangible leadership skills.

I happened to be at summer camp with a bunch of 4th/5th graders when the derecho tore through the camp. The poise and judgement (and authority) that the young (15-20yo) men/women working the camp showed was extraordinary. The "Be Prepared" thing really hit home for me then.

It is a hook if you want to go to a college where it is a hook. Many of us do not prefer those schools.

Eagle Scout is a big deal.

Great option got the less athletic kid.

Which of the schools profiled in the article are not your "type" of school? Johns Hopkins? Wisconsin? Pomona? UCLA?

You don't like schools full of really intelligent students?

Yes, both of my nephews attained theirs in the last three years.

Yes, I believe it makes a candidate stand out.

And the grapes probably tasted bad too.

Boy Scouts is a disgusting organization. Gross. Can’t imagine being a part of that. Eagle Scouts kids are amazing and none of that mess is their fault, but why continue associating with an organization that abetted horrific behavior for decades. Yikes.

Its really dated. And the organization is reprehensible.
