Eagle Scout rank as a hook for admissions

As a hiring manager for recent graduated college and MBA grads, the eagle scouts get a significant extra look because of this. There still has to be the requisite smarts, but I think outside of DC people don't quite get how important this can be.

Hate for pedophilia and the organization that accommodated it, yes. Shocking isn’t it?

A dime a dozen in NOVA. Shows kid can follow directions and jump through hoops and be submissive under scout master's leadership and I'm not talking necessarily se#uall*

As the long-time volunteer-commenter, let me clarify that the BSA volunteers, members and program are absolutely splendid things. Eagle Scouts are highly advantaged in life because of the experiences they had. And yes, abide in the BSA has essentially been non-existent since the late 1980s.

Set all of that aside and just read the admittedly hateful comments of the persistent individual who posts an absolute unwillingness to view anything or anybody associated with the BSA in and acceptable light. Please know that she reflects a broadly-held view. I know this because I hear it repeatedly from people when I share my volunteer involvement. No matter what anyone feels about the BSA, it will not exist in its current form within a couple of years. Just a simple fact of the profit incentives provided to our American tort system and the costs of insurance. Further, after the BSA case has wound through the system, similar yours service organizations will be next. The incompentcies of many organization leaders of those earlier times will result in a reformation of how children will experience the world. Most people like me will depart these volunteer organizations and roles. The government will help families form the character of their young people Rather than people like me.

Spell check is tough when using an iPhone. I meant to say youth abuse has been essentially non-existent in the BSA since the late 1980s.

How about Sidwell and other private schools that covered up abuse by their faculty? Should they be shut down, as well?

I’m sorry you feel this way. We have been involved in BSA, and are well aware of the litigation, and this has not been our experience at all. I think it speaks to the types of people you’re hanging out with, not “most people” in America. I question your perspective on this because no one can be as certain about the outcome of all this as you purport to be.

Submissive under the scout master? Have you been to a Scout meeting? They are boy lead. Not sure about all troops but the adults are present for guidance when needed. The boys run the whole thing.

How about a black belt in Taekwondo? is this a hook?

maybe start your own thread on it.

Depends, I would say. I used to take taekwondo, and many studios just hand out belts as a money maker. Yes, including up to black belts for kids.

Honestly, I don't think most kids who have black belts are real black belts.

Eagle scout as a hook is just another variation of college sports as affirmative action for rich whites. Athletes are held to a lower standard by admissions officers, and in the Ivy League, 65 percent of players are white. But they represent full or near full-pay for schools. So, come now eagle $cout rank as a hook, just a variation of $port$ as a hook.

Because there is no decent substitute, and besides the National Capital Area Chapter is squeaky clean. No issues, good funding, and plenty of liberal Dem parents (prob the majority).

If you really like Scouting, military is a natural next step

This mindset. Not everyone believes this is something to admire.

What do you find disgusting about the current Scout organization?
