| So many of the winter hats look too juvenile to me. Am I really supposed to be wearing a pom-pom hat the same as I did in 1983? Or a slouchy beanie? Suggestions with links for a winter hat that looks age-appropriate in the city (as opposed to a snow activities hat). |
Seriously though, you are 45, not 75. You could try a wool beret or some sort of wide-brimmed hat , but I don't find those to be very warm. |
| I’m not sure what makes a beanie slouchy but I don’t see what’s not age appropriate about beanies generally. |
| I love the classic bucket, Dior like style |
A poster was roasted for making fun of an older woman rocking her pom-pom hat (think Bo Derek bouncing her braided hair on the beach). Many thought it was fine to wear whatever made the wearer feel good. Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable in a pom-pom hat over the age of 25 because I would feel silly, and frankly the pom-poms hanging down annoy me and get in the way. There are lots of beanies and headbands that really do keep your ears warm. It's difficult to go try things on with Covid but you can always photoshop pics of yourself. Doesn't have to be a great photoshop job to give you an idea of how it looks on you. |

There are lots of options. Something like this looks a bit more dressy and less juvenile and would probably actually keep you warm:

I love this look! I actually wear fur hats during the winter. I just bought a finn raccoon hat. I would love to own a fox hat like the one Alexis Colby is wearing! |
I saw an old lady wearing a beanie with a pair of ripped jeans in Japan. I don't know, but that just looked really weird. |
For me it's the difference between trying to look far younger than you are and enjoying a style. Think tube tops and hello kitty apparel on 50 year old women. You can look stylish and sexy at ANY age but that is rarely accomplished by wearing the same style for 30 years. |

You need really need a hat in the DC area winter, OP.
I do enjoy those who bundle up in Bean boots, scarves, 30 below graded parka, wool hat and glove when snow is *expected* however. |
| I wear a beanie and I am 44 yo. It's not slouchy and appropriately covers my ears. |

I wear the beanie with pompom on top because it's warm and cute. It's not what I'd wear if I were dressing up, but to walk the dog or play outside with the kids, it's warm and covers my head and ears. Those aren't fashion show times for me.

OP here. I clicked on the link and said, OK, a black hat in real fur. Not terrible on the model. I don't own any real furs far as I know, mostly because I am allergic to all animals' hair. Then I clicked on the gray version and the model looked like a winter acorn-headed Cecily Barker fairy. Weird proportion. I am browsing Hats in the Belfry.com now... |
Correction: you DO NOT really need a hat here. |
