Maybe I'm just very out of the loop, but I was surprised to hear from my teenage daughter today that showering after middle/high school gym class just isn't a thing anymore, at least in the U.S. Does anyone know when this stopped, because growing up in the late 80's/early 90's it was absolutely still a thing we all had to go through. |
I graduated in 2006 and we never used the showers. I never got sweaty enough to need to. |
I never did in the 80s either but they tried to make us and I refused and got in trouble. There are not many worse things at that age than baring your changing body. |
I graduated in the '90s and never did.
Didn't have time for it (as it was we had only 5 minutes to change out of our gym clothes and re-dress into street clothes). Didn't sweat enough anyway. Where did you grow up OP? Public or private school? |
Never showered at school. Not enough time. |
It's definitely not a thing anymore. My kids have never taken a shower after PE (senior and sophmore). PE is not required after sophomore year.
We did have to take them or at least pretend to when I was growing up. Graduated HS in 1990. |
Graduated high school in '02, never did, had lots of friends at other schools, never heard of anyone using the school showers.
|
Graduated from a high school in moco in the late 90s and there was no showering in middle school or high school. |
I graduated from high school in 1996. Most of the girls didn’t...not enough time, as a PP said. |
'91 hs grad here. We never showered after gym. |
Same. It would have destroyed my teased hair! |
I was just talking about this the other day! It was totally a thing back in the late 80s - you were required to shower, and they had a checklist that they checked off every time as you came out of the shower. You got in trouble if you skipped the shower. And they gave you a towel that was the size of a hand towel to cover yourself up. Ugh it was awful, and in retrospect, wtf?? |
For those that did- did you have to bring your own towel? Did you wash your hair? This is crazy to me. |
It absolutley was awful. I was an early bloomer in middle school and the other girls all called me beaver. I'll let you figure out why. I'm glad it's not a thing anymore, especially since my son is uncircumcised. I remember hearing about all the teasing that happened because of that. |
Ha, this brought back a vivid memory of the dirty laundry smell of the gym locker room - not pleasant. I graduated high school in 2005 and nobody took showers after middle or high school gym class - though there were showers in the locker room. |
