For those wondering, expect vaccinations to rollout and schools to be fully back in session (no hybrid or DL) in 2022 not 2021.
Below is an expected timeline for approval of a COVID vaccine. After approval there will be the hurdles of mass production and mass adoption. It's hard for me to imagine us getting past those steps before mid to late 2022. I'd love to be wrong but I'm just being realistic. |

I've been saying this for months. Big public schools aren't going back until 2022-23 in the DC area. The "until zero deaths / vaccine" position taken by the unions means 2022-23 earliest.
I think some schools will pretend it will be earlier, but that's just posturing and theatrics. I think if you want in-person school, you have to move or go to private. |
| I will be really mad if public school does not go back in person 5 days a week in 2021-2022. |
Prepare to be mad. It's not going to happen. Or make plans to get out. |

Curious, OP and first PP, do you have school-aged children?
You're probably right, but I hope you're wrong. My child will be 11 years old in September 2022 and this will have consumed 25% of his life. He's not doing well now, and I can only guess what another year or more of this will do him. And he's one of the lucky ones, from a stable, supportive home. I get there are no easy solutions and we have very few options, but that doesn't stop this from being devastating. |
| It's not ideal, but my son is 11. My main worry is that he'll get insufficient socialization, he can do school online, even though he has moderate ADHD. It's actually a tad better, because he is not distracted by classmates. |
| Ugh this makes me doubly glad we hired a tutor. I can’t believe next year will be more of the same. |
I am the first PP. My kids are middle school and HS. What's going on with HS students now is ugly. I am very worried based on what I see, across a widely diverse group of kids. |
| If I didn’t have a kid I would kill myself. Overall economic outlook is bleak for so many. |
I hate the pandemic and have lost a significant portion of my salary due to the pandemic, but if that is honestly the way you feel, you need to seek the help of a professional. |
+1 People are always shouting 'follow the science' on these forums. Well the science is saying not going to happen until 2022. |
| I’m a teacher and the thought of doing distance instruction through this year alone is enough to drive me over the edge. |

“After approvals there will be the hurdles of mass production.” No- mass production is happening now. The hurdles to getting that started were eradicated when the government and pharmaceutical companies themselves decided to take the financial risk of manufacture before approval.
The manufacturers leading the pack anticipate enough doses to vaccinate every American by summer of 2021. Approval is imminent, and frontline workers will be first in line. Get out of here with late 2022 bs. |
Exactly. It is nice to finally have some common sense on this subject. |
Okay, you just keep thinking that vaccine is coming immediately. Didn't your president say its coming...yesterday? |
