With Dr. Salmon to provide a "COVID-19 update."

Any ideas about what will be covered?

Hopefully say he is taking over Montgomery County

Hogan will simultaneously say that he wants schools to open but he lacks the authority to make it happen. It's great when you can blame someone else for your lack of leadership

What lack of leadership? He's stated it's OK for schools to open if they meet the state-wide metrics, and all of them do currently. Many counties, like Washington, Allegany, Garrett, Hartford, and Baltimore have either started reopening or will do so in the next few weeks.

He can't _force_ schools to reopen since schools are at the county level not state level, but he can _allow_ it.

Good prediction. Numbers are low!! No one died today! Everything is looking up! I told you can play sports! I wish I could tell you to open schools, but I can't. Sill, I think you should open them as soon as possible. There's no reason not to open (well, except for budget, bussing, and other logistical issues).

Maybe he will announce more funding to help districts reopen?

I'm more interested in the AACPS meetings next week - sounds like they are (attempting) to roll out a hybrid reopening plan.

Honest question...if school districts haven't been paying to air condition or heat schools, electricity except minimally, fuel up school busses, etc., what have they been doing with that savings?

I would assume updates that cant happen when kids are there. At a local high school they re-did the tennis courts, cleared away lots of brush, etc. Its not that they cant do it with kids, its that other stuff comes up.

I can answer for my county - Howard. They have paid the bus contractors because they want them to be available for in person school when that comes. They obtained chromebooks for every kid, internet access, food services, DL training, etc. There have been some savings associated with closing the buildings, but there have also been many new expenses.

Exactly this.
He said they can open and is allowing the CE to make the decision...that is what good leaders do.
I am willing to bet if he told all MD schools they have to open by November 1 you would be screaming he is a tyrant. Make up your freaking mind.

I didn’t think he could legally re-open schools. So to me he is showing us what he would like, as a leader. Whether or not I agree that the school should be reopened or not (I don’t) we can’t have it both ways. He either doesn’t have the authority in which case he only can express what he wants or he has the authority and will bulldoze with the counties want.
