Trump tariffs: ruin U.S. economy until 2040

It will be a cold day in hell when China relents to Trump's nonsense, Chinese have a very HIGH threshold for pain especially of the fiscal variety, Trump is way out of his league when dealing with China. They haven't said a single word, it will all be actions, Xi Jingping didn't broadcast his tariff signing ceremony all over the world, he's not a lunatic.

- have short, domestic supply chains;
- have inelastic demand relative to price;
- be able to get domestic production up and running relatively quickly.

Any thoughts on winners and losers here? A potential winners might be the domestic wine & beer industry - South American and Australian wines have gobbled market share based on low cost. Seems an easy reach to produce more domestic wine. Furniture might be another. The Carolinas used to produce large quantities before cheap Chinese imports took away their market.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to get a furniture factory up and running?

I’d love good quality American furniture again.

DP. You can have it now. Almost all of the furniture in my house was made in North Carolina or West Virginia. It costs way more than Wayfair or IKEA, but I bought it to last.

Let's not kid ourselves, Xi is a lunatic too. But he's quieter about it.

And China also depends upon the US markets. Trump's bats*** crazy negotiating tactics are actually best-suited to China. Using them on the rest of the world is just dumb. And harmful to the US and to his plan, whatever that is.

Technical he is, but he spends most of his time on his podcast.

Respectfully, I disagree. China has broadened their markets so much that U.S market is simply one part of their world market. Also, like I said earlier Chinese can suffer and feel the pain a LOT longer than us. I have lived in China, I have worked with Chinese, these are not individualistic societies like ours, these people have deep capabilities to hunker down and bear the fiscal pain, especially for national pride.

The nice thing about Trump doing it this way is that it is even easier to challenge these tariffs as illegal. They are beyond his authority from the emergency powers he is using so unlawful; they are a usurpation of Article I powers to tariff so unconstitutional; and they are facially invalid because he's using nonsense numbers and tariffs directed to nonsense countries.

Actually, the rest of the world has a high threshold for pain as well. Developing countries know how to perservere and do without. There are still many, many people in Europe who vividly remember the decades post-WWII when there was still debris and carnage and decades more of rebuilding. Those folks will all weather the strom while the "tough" Yankees qill quickly start blubbering.

But there are guardrails. Congress just needs to step up. It has the power. We are a republic not a monarchy.
