| DS is now eating 3 meals a day and only breastfeeding 5 days a day. He sleeps through the night and I pump before I go to bed. I have been on the mini pill since 6 weeks postpartum. Should I look into getting on the regular pill? Or an IUD? I am worried because I read the mini pill doesn’t work as well once a baby isn’t breastfeeding around the clock. I have been on the mini pill before and it has always been effective but I have never been on it this long (7 months postpartum). |
I am on the mini pill now, 4 months post partum. I didn't want an IUD (know too many people who have had issues), and I can't take a combo pill due to the estrogen (history of aural migraine). I was told by my OB that the mini pill is nearly as effective as a combo pill, provided it is taken at EXACTLY the same time every day. I've spoken to two different doctors, and neither told me that effectiveness changes when the baby is no longer nursing as much. I don't see how that would have any bearing on the delivery of progesterone received from the pill, anyway. My understanding is that the lack of effectiveness some women experience is due to not following guidance with regard to taking it at the same time every day. I set an alarm on my phone. |
| Op here - yes other problem is that I don’t take it the same time each day. I just take it when I go to bed, which varies day to day. |
Yeah, that’s not likely to be very effective, whether or not you’re still nursing as much. If you can’t stick to a strict schedule, you either need to come to terms with the possibility of an accidental pregnancy or switch forms of birth control. |
| OP why don’t you just set an alarm and take it the same time every day? Seems like a pretty obvious solution. |
Op here - where are you keeping your pill that you set an alarm and it’s with you everywhere you are? Like in a purse or something? I don’t carry a purse and I switch diaper bags so much that I can’t remember where I put my wallet most of the time. The only thing I have with me 100% of the time is my phone. Other than that it’s a crap shoot. I wake up and go to bed different times each day. |
Could you get some of those little tiny envelopes and put it in one of those rubber pouches on the back of your phone? NP who has not other advice, because I handled birth control a different way. |
| The mini pill should be taken off the market. The real world efficacy is something like 50%. I start on real birth control 6 weeks post partum. I'm also extremely fertile (one oops and 2 on the first try). |
I’m always in My house at 9 pm. I carry the pills in my purse. It’s not that hard. |
Don’t tie it to your sleep schedule then? Maybe set an alarm for like 8 p.m. every night or something when you’re likely to be home but not in bed yet. |
|
Is there something that you do at the same time everyday? Rake your pill then.
|
| Did anyone's baby get acne once they started the mini-pill? I just started it, and my baby is broken out. |
If you have issues taking it at the same time every day (which is no knock on you - I would have problems too!), I would definitely switch to a more reliable form of birth control. I got a Mirena IUD 10 weeks postpartum and love it. |
Yup this. If you don't want to risk a pregnancy now you either a) make sure you take that pill at the same time every day or b) find an alternative form of birth control You're a mom now, time to be a grown up. |
Op here - thanks I have 3 kids and have been a mom for a while now. My Ob has always just told me while I am breastfeeding to use the mini pill. I used it with my other two kids with no problem but have never breastfed this long so I was sure. I never even had my 6 week checkup since it was the middle of quarantine. |
