Playing styles

Do clubs/ coaches let parents know what playing style they are trying achieve?
My DS's U15 team's coach has changed the formation about 3 times and the team doesn't seem to have an idea of what style they play. (Possession, long ball, high press...etc.) We have only played 2 games and the boys have been practicing since June. I'd figure by now it would be locked in.
Confusion reigns supreme on the sideline at our games. (both spectators and the bench)
I'd like to hear what others' experiences are.

I also have the opinion that this coach is not good.

Way to broad of a discuss, this will go nowhere. Talk to your coach.

Our coach never told the parents, but my DD certainly knows and can explain what is expected positions in given situation- I know because I’ve seen him randomly quiz the kids during practice

We were told possession and high pressing.
Let's just say they are still working on it.

My son's U14 coach does not provide explanations as to what formations the team will be playing. I actually wish he would because I have no idea.

Every club in the area claims to play possession, but everyone outside of the club will tell you the club plays direct/long ball/kick and run.

because every parent demands their U10s win tournaments and possession takes a long time to develop into a winning style where as long ball needs a few kids with strong kegs and fast strikers

ask your coach. if they don't know what you are talking about, RUN.

sometimes the playing style may be based around the opponent.

Possibly two of the most over generalized posts ever posted, not to mention staid. Spoken by people that likely never played but just watch and pontificate.

Alexandria has a style. I've never had a kid there, but every time we've played them they've been true to their style of possession and playing out of the back at every level.

I know...soon the howling monkeys will fly in with complaints about their TD's salary. Whatevs.

Coach here:

It's hit and miss whether a coach tells a parents what shape or strategy the team will employ during the season. Communication w/ parents is an area most coaches can really improve on.

While I haven't discussed the shape with my parents, I have talked about my approach to the game.

I'll be honest, some coaches don't do it because they don't want to deal with the inevitable parent who wants to question their every move and you get stuck in this endless dialogue where the parent is never happy.

I wouldn't surprise me if your team tried a few shapes during pre-season. Depending on the shapes some are pretty easy to evolve into.

I'd be a little concerned if you switched just before our after your first game or two. That may tip me off that the coach is more interested in results than the development and performance.

Is the coach new to the team? Do you have several new players? Both can contribute to needing a bit more time before settling into a final shape.

All that being said, if you've been practicing since June; should be pretty clear what shape(s) your team should be playing.

For some teams, it’s not consistent across the club. I’ve seen a lot of long ball from them as well as other clubs.

LOL, stop being a sideline coach.
