Very definitely Arlington if your son is good enough to get on the academy team. If not that good, then Alexandria also a good choice. |
Vienna 2008 team is very good. Other teams at Vienna are kind of hit or miss but the 2008 one has good players |
Agreed on VYS 08s. They just had a player go to Arlington top team and another go to bryc top team. Alexandria 08s are the best in the state and are chock full top to bottom of the roster. If you live in Vienna, I would check Vienna, McLean or PAC. |
If the Vienna 08 team is so good, why did one player leave for Arlington and one player leave for BRYC? |
You can ask them. They are still pretty good. You may or may not know that it’s a team sport, rosters get bigger as you get older, and parents have their kids switch teams for a variety of reasons. Or you may be the simpleton that’s your email suggests. Take your pick. If that’s too hard, go with the latter. |

How difficult is it for a team to switch to possession type style and what type of players does a team need?
(I am asking because possession soccer is more effective but it seems coaches don’t play or practice this style much.) |
Possession style is not the most effective strategy to win at the younger ages. Players need good foot skills/touch/ability to make accurate passes to be good at this style. Playing good possession style soccer is a multiyear commitment. Some coaches/clubs select players for size and speed alone and just let them play. These teams/clubs tend to be more effective at the younger ages and not so much at U18 level. |
Cant speak for these individual players but Arlington and BRYC are ECNL Boys clubs along with Loudoun, VDA, and McLean while Vienna is not. |
Agreed. High risk when young, but if people stick with it and the team has requisite skill and comparable athletes, high reward as they get older. Depends on what kind of things you want your kid to learn, both in soccer and outside of it. We are at a club known for possession style (and went there for that reason) but there are a lot of variations and subtleties depending on the coach/team when it comes to these styles. Best not to worship at any altar. |
There is zero proof that possession is more effective at older ages. People who are possession obsessed and clubs that are exclusively possession are actually harming the development of our players. Free the kids to be creative and think on their own. |
Recruiting from outside clubs. Possession of players helps too. |
Interesting. Which clubs do you recommend? |
| Possession style is great for technical skilled players. But please don't fool yourself . Big strong fast athletic players can always be taught "technical" skills. However small less athletic technical players can not be taught to be genetically more athletic, bigger ,faster, and stronger, Its simple science people you are better in the long run to try to develop natural athletes rather than wasting your time on small slow "technically sound players as they have a lower ceiling. |
I've seen many bigger athletic players flop trying to learn those skills, and I've definitely seen less athletic, smaller kids running circles around those kids. There's a lot more to it. |
I did not say it was more effective at older ages. I said it was high reward. I also agree that it is important to encourage creativity. As I said, don't worship at any altar, including rolling the ball out and expecting them to be wonderful improvisational players and teams. That's equal nonsense. |
