Wow.
Not a single teacher from any of the three special schools agreed to return to school. Given the unanimity, I can only assume it's a union/job action rather than the thought-out risk evaluation by each teacher. Sigh. https://www.capitalgazette.com/education/ac-cn-reopening-anne-arundel-schools-20200915-glvdiocp7neufghicuwwu7agtm-story.html |
| fire them all and hire non union, problem solved |
| These teachers' choice is truly horrible. Fire them all and find some teachers who actually care about their students. |
| One friend quit her job as a special ed teacher in the US, and went to teach overseas in military schools, where it is safer. And she makes a lot more money. Special ed teachers have options. |
Yes, because it's so easy to find special ed teachers at the drop of a hat. |
I'm the OP and I really don't think it's fair to say the teachers don't care about their students. I know many who absolutely love their students. And as a PP said, special ed teachers - especially those working with the most high-needs students - are hard to come by. I'm just so frustrated that they simply said no instead of "here's what we can do to make this work" Blerg. |
| There is a massive struggle to find special ed teachers in a good year. Firing the ones you have instead of working with them to make it a safe environment is a ridiculous suggestion. |

Why should teachers have the choice to return? Everyone else has been told to get on with it or get out. What about police force, supermarket workers, nurses and the rest. Teachers are being far to precious. Get on with the job you are paid for. Children are paying the price.

+1. Why is AACo giving them a choice?! |
| This is the union not the teachers. The teachers want to go back but are told by the union what ato post. My friend posted she wanted to go back on social media and union asked her to take it down |
It sounds like they did say what it would take to work: “Vice President Melissa Ellis went through a checklist based on some concerns she heard from educators on topics like using PPE, practicing social distancing, disinfecting surfaces and air ventilation.” I hate teaching distance learning, but also would hesitate to sign up to go back if they are keeping others home. I would qualify for FMLA so you couldn’t fire me, either. It seems clear we don’t know the full teachers’ side of things. |
| They should at least make the teachers come into the building. Otherwise they don't want to end their vacations at home. And don't tell me dl is harder blah blah. It certainly isn't for SN kids with more than mild disability |
Apparently they were able to find contractors to do the job if you read the article. They also had teaching assistants volunteer. This is truly shameful. Honestly, they need to be fired. They aren't fit for the job. |
So what is the union going to do if they go against them? Fire her? If the union isn't representing her views, what are they there for? The union works for her, not the other way around. That is ridiculous. |
