Number of Applicants for TJ this year ?

What is the accurate total number of applicants for TJ admissions each year. What percentage of 8th graders apply for TJ each year from FCPS and Loudon county.

It’s Loudoun county

In the past three years, applicant totals have dropped from over 3100 for class of 2022, to a little under 2800 for class of 2023, all the way down to a little over 2500 for class of 2024. The trendline is very negative.

The numbers on applications per county/jurisdiction are not usually released publicly.

Why are applications going down?
How many spots are there?

Applications to TJ go up and down. It has been between 2500 and 3000 for more than 15 years.

There are typically around 480 seats offered to each incoming freshman class.

There are a ton of theories out there for why applications are going down. They have been trending downward across all demographics for the past two years - slightly downward among Asian students, but significantly downward among Black, Hispanic, and especially white applicants. Fewer than 600 white students applied to TJ last year, compared to over 1300 just 6-8 years ago.

I would have expected application numbers to trend upwards again this year with TJ returning to its #1 national ranking in US News and World Report, as families motivated by prestige come back out of the woodwork (there are a lot of these in Northern Virginia). However, with the COVID situation and with likely changes to this year's process, it could really go either way. Apps could plummet or they could soar.

The application window hasn’t even opened yet. We have no idea how many applicants there are.

Additionally, that number is not usually released until the final demographics are released, which this past year was in early June.

You couldn't pay me to send my kids there anymore -- too high stress and we have really good local schools. When I was a kid, TJ wasn't as high stress. I imagine there are a lot of parents that have that same mind set.

TJ is only too high stress for students who are not smart enough to handle the pace of instruction. Students who are truly smart - those students TJ was designed for - do not find it too high stress.

Yup, my two kids love it! I'll bet that PP has no kids there and just relies on rumors from sources like DCUM.

My guess is that the commute too and fro is one of the biggest inhibitors.

My two kids love it at TJ. Only folks who either don't have a kid in TJ or the ones that have pushed an average kid into TJ complain. It would be the same if you push an under prepared kid into Algebra in 7th grade.

There are an awful lot of average (or perhaps slightly above average) kids who are pushed into TJ. People severely underestimate that number. Severely.

A lot of high-achieving parents who can't come to grips with the fact that their kid is relatively ordinary - so they spend a fortune to make them appear gifted.

+1000

The student that may have cheated via Curiegate were NOT admitted on “merit”. If the allegations are true, then we should assume, as a group, that the 133 students are average.
