Why are applications going down? How many spots are there?
There are typically around 480 seats offered to each incoming freshman class. There are a ton of theories out there for why applications are going down. They have been trending downward across all demographics for the past two years - slightly downward among Asian students, but significantly downward among Black, Hispanic, and especially white applicants. Fewer than 600 white students applied to TJ last year, compared to over 1300 just 6-8 years ago. I would have expected application numbers to trend upwards again this year with TJ returning to its #1 national ranking in US News and World Report, as families motivated by prestige come back out of the woodwork (there are a lot of these in Northern Virginia). However, with the COVID situation and with likely changes to this year's process, it could really go either way. Apps could plummet or they could soar.
