DD has a list of college preferences that are hard to match up in my opinion. She wants:
A diverse community(she's African American, but our family we white and Hispanic relatives) In or near an urban area. she doesn't want to deal with a car in college(her words) Not full of a lot of "preppy kids"(her words). She likes the theatre and artsy types. Also would prefer a decent amount of smart girls who don't party so she can make friends. She doesn't like large schools. DH is a UMD alum, so we've been to the campus often and she says she feels intimidated. She is interested in Howard, Spelman, Emerson, Arcadia, UMBC, Marymount Manhattan, Point Park, Seton Hall, and Manhattan College VCU, Temple, etc would be on the list if the student body was smaller. |
| What are her stats OP? |
| 24 ACT(likely wont retake due to COVID), low to mid B average, 4 AP's, basketball team, student government, other academic extracurriculars. Also has a slight physical impairment |
I think that’s a great list for her stats. What major is she considering? Has she taken 4 years of FL? What sciences? |
| Howard sounds like a match. |
She said she wants a diverse school. How is a school in which 90% of students are one race “diverse”? |
| Howard is not diverse. |
| OP here, I advised her to add HBCU's to the list. I'm aware that it's not diverse. Plus, she wanted to have a local option |
Likely Marketing or something along the lines of product design, analytics, or visual design. She's taken Bio, Chem, Physics, and is in Environmental Science now. Spanish I-III |
| How about the New School in NYC? |
| If she was interested in temple but it’s too big, what about Lincoln University (PA)? |
I wouldn't bother with Manhattan College unless the major is engineering. Fordham? Fordham has more recognition than Marymount. Depending on interests, New School? FIT? Pratt? |
| HBCU are as diverse as Augusta National. |
|
I like your list for her OP. But you need to clarify “diverse”. Actually diverse would be no race above 40- 45% or so and mull races in double digits. Plus maybe some internationals.
An HBCU isn’t diverse any more than a midwestern SLAC is diverse or a TJ is diverse. If what she wants is a majority AA school you should say that. Because Pacific Union is very diverse. But maybe not in the way you want. |
Fordham sounds like a reach. Manhattan college is in a great location. |
