Does a college like this exist?

Ithaca college

Ithaca is in a pretty area, but not urban.

THat is a tough mix! Maybe Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY. I was also thinking SUNY Purchase? University of Baltimore is diverse in a Black/white sense and could be a good safety, MICA gives Baltimore a young, diverse arts scene. I think Providence would be a great city based on what your daughter wants-very diverse and artsy, but it terms of colleges she would likely only be competitive for Johnson and Wales U (no longer just a cooking school!). I don't know if it would be a good fit, and maybe too big, but worth taking a look.

A diverse community(she's African American, but our family we white and Hispanic relatives)
In or near an urban area. she doesn't want to deal with a car in college(her words)
Not full of a lot of "preppy kids"(her words). She likes the theatre and artsy types. Also would prefer a decent amount of smart girls who don't party so she can make friends.
She doesn't like large schools. DH is a UMD alum, so we've been to the campus often and she says she feels intimidated.

She is interested in Howard, Spelman, Emerson, Arcadia, UMBC, Marymount Manhattan, Point Park, Seton Hall, and Manhattan College

VCU, Temple, etc would be on the list if the student body was smaller.

Add Clark ATL!

My DD’s friend goes to Rodger Williams University in RI. There’s also Providence College, but that’s a little reach.

SUNY New Paltz. Diverse school, artsy town, an easy bus ride to NYC. Not sure what the out of state tuition is.

See if any of these work:

Goucher
Bryn Mawr
Skidmore (a reach and not urban but it has a nice town and used to run buses to NYC)
Rochester Institute of Technology
SUNY Purchase
Ithaca

Bryn Mawr and Goucher are interesting options. Thanks!

VCU actually wouldn't feel as huge as you'd think. The campus is mixed in with the Fan district so it doesnt have the huge campus feel, more urban. Very diverse school, not a big sports school other than basketball, and one of the most artsy schools you will find.

Not racially diverse, but it’s got a lot of diversity among types of students

As does every other school.

No not really. There are plenty of schools that draw from a much smaller geographic region, and don't have the international diversity, and that are as committed to financial aid and so don't have the same socio-economic diversity.

I know it might seem big, but check out UIC in Chicago. It’s in a great neighborhood, it’s really diverse, Chicago is a great place to be a student, and it’s about half the size of UMD. I wouldn’t say it’s a small college at all, but it isn’t huge.
