How about University of San Francisco? Beautiful urban location, vibe was not preppy and diverse. I think her stats would work there

She said she wants a diverse school. How is a school in which 90% of students are one race “diverse”?

It’s not racially diverse, but Howard is very social-economically and geographically diverse. The students are from all over the country and world and there’s more socio-economic diversity than there is at comparable schools. Also, there’s no predominant student culture in terms of preppy, artsy, nerdy, etc. there are niches for every kind of kid.

OP here, I agree. I'm an HBCU alum and HBCU's are a lot more diverse than people realize. Prior to college, I did not know anyone from the Carribean, Africa, or nor did I interact with many people who were upper middle class African American like myself.

My kid is at McDaniel which has great diversity, and fits what OP wants in many ways, but is not as urban as she wants, so I didn't suggest it.

McDaniel would probably be a low match for her child and is a really nice school.

UMBC is big but it's very diverse. It's also easy to transfer to other in state public universities if you get tired of Baltimore (I know quite a few transferred to UMD).

Not many colleges fit all the boxes. I would prioritize the preferences.

Neither of those are urban. I went to one. Cars are certainly optional but you’re stuck on (residential) colleges without them. Both otherwise fit the bill but I would imagine are on the whiter side of diverse.

Anonymous wrote:I like your list for her OP. But you need to clarify “diverse”. Actually diverse would be no race above 40- 45% or so and mull races in double digits. Plus maybe some internationals.

An HBCU isn’t diverse any more than a midwestern SLAC is diverse or a TJ is diverse.

If what she wants is a majority AA school you should say that. Because Pacific Union is very diverse. But maybe not in the way you want.

The OP already clarified this. No need for your pedantic lecture.

They have a great arts program. Some of the smaller schools will only have very small arts program, if any. My parents really encouraged me to go to a smaller school. I ended up transferring to a larger one and loving it. It didn't feel large once I got into my major Junior year.

The OP said, "She does not want a large school," so why would you say send her to a large state university?

Trust that the kids knows herself.

In your story, it sounded like you followed your parents' lead. This student sounds like she has some clear preferences. They should not be ignored!

You entirely missed the point. UMD and other large schools divide up into majors. My major only had a few hundred students so it felt very much like a small school within a large school. We all took the same classes in the same one building.
