Left lane on BW Parkway

Anonymous
Before I get flamed for this post, I learned to drive in Los Angeles where there's really no concept of a 2 lane highway and the far left lane on our 12+ lane freeways is the "carpool lane" (e.g. HOV).

I was driving on the BW Parkway today (speed limit 55), doing almost 70 in the left lane when suddenly this truck comes out of nowhere and starts riding my tail, flipping me off. When I could I got into the right lane to let him pass and give me more of the bird.

I know the left lane is for passing but is it only for passing - meaning no cruising ever in the left lane? I guess the parkway trips me up because the speed limit is low, there's always traffic and always cars in both lanes. It's not like a rural road where it's easy to stay in the right lane and keep the left lane for passing.

If I am already at 10-15 over the speed limit I drive and stay in the left lane if I want. If someone wants to go faster than that too bad.

Then you’re an a$$hole. It ain’t your job to police the speed limit. It IS you job to get the hell out of the PASSING lane when someone wants to, you know, PASS. Just move over, let them pass, and get back in the left lane if it’s that important to you.

Not to mention it’s a great way to invite road-rage.

I know the left lane is for passing but is it only for passing - meaning no cruising ever in the left lane? Correct. No cruising in the left. No one follows this rule, but everyone should.

No obligation to do that until it is safe and convenient to do so. Expecting others to swerve out of your way so you can endanger everybody on the road is juvenile and asinine. You want rigid and disciplined traffic, go drive the Autobahn, not the Parkway.

It's relative. If a faster vehicle comes up or you see them approaching, you try and move over. It has little to do with your actual speed - slower traffic keep right, faster traffic and pass on the left.

Correct. If you’re already moving substantially faster than the traffic in the right lane and there’s no where to pull in there, you’re under no obligation to speed up. The left lane is for passing, but it doesn’t belong to anyone. Speed demons think everyone else should have to hit the brakes and get behind the painters van doing 45 just so they can drive 90 mph and never have to hit the brakes.

I am PP and I absolutely agree. I was responding to the PPP who didn’t mention that - s/he just said she was staying in the left lane because s/he wants, and if anyone wants to go faster, too bad. Didn’t sound like s/he had any intention to let others pass when it’s safe to do so. THAT’S being an a$$hole.

Both lanes on Beach Dr are closed to traffic between Friday and Monday. Have no problem with that. On Thursday in the middle of rush hour people are roller blading and walking their dogs. In the road. With the cars. Consider yourself lucky OP and just try to get out of crazy people's way.

PS OP if the story is as you stated you did nothing wrong other than running into a nutcase in a vehicle. Happens all the time around here.

Left lane is for passing only. Speed up, pass, then move right regardless of speed. *

*except if you are a Maryland driver. Since you are the worst drivers on the planet we just want you not to kill us and no rules apply to MD drivers.

There are states where it’s illegal to be in the left lane unless passing. That is fantastic.

Wrong! Left lane is for passing. Period. OP was cruising, not passing, so OP did something wrong. Props for checking, OP, now you know better.
