un-enrolling and homeschooling

Anonymous
Im considering un-enrolling my kindergartner and officially homeschooling. Looking at the schedule that the school sent, it just feels like way too much screen time. I cant even get her to do a zoom dance class, I dont see how zoom kindergarten is going to work for her. I was thinking about waiting for teacher assignments next week to see what her teacher is actually expecting of kids. All that aside- can anyone who has gone through the paperwork process provide any details on how it was to set up. Will DC be doing home checks this year or any other standards for the homeschool?

Youg might want to post or search in the homeschooling thread. If you can do it, I would consider homeschooling for K. Your child will probably learn more and enjoy being 5/6 more. There are lots of great resources and curriculums to fit your interest

We are in a charter, so we are going to try to stick out the zoom for my 1st grader to keep official enrollment. However, there is a great facebook homeschooling group called Secular, Academic, Eclectic. They have recommendations for materials and approaches - including some that you can order with everything you need in a box with pretty detailed teaching guides.

I would not home school in normal times, but I have learned a lot and it is a really attractive alternative to the craziness of last spring.

I've never heard of a home check in DC. You do need to have some sort of plan, you have to attest that you aren't going to outsource the learning to a tutor etc (parent/guardian must provide the instruction) and you must maintain a portfolio of work completed.

The process is simple. The form is here and it must be submitted 15 days before you intend to start homeschooling. https://osse.dc.gov/service/homeschooling-district-columbia

We are looking at putting our kindergartener in a daycare that is running a transitional kindergarten class instead of attempting the distance learning. It's unclear whether we need to formally state we are going to home school, or if we can just enenroll from K and go back next year to our inbound school. Has anyone been able to get a straight answer on this?

Our charter is being very flexible and has said that they are ok with kids forgoing DL and they would not lose their spot as long as they are doing something and learning. So it would be a good idea to email and check with your school.

What you are doing isn't homeschooling, it's enrolling in private school. If you never enrolled in dcps, you don't need to do anything. If you previously enrolled, you need to contact the old school to disenroll and tell them the name of the new school.

I would homeschool a PreK or Kindergartener. If you have the time, it would be more relaxed and fun.

Thanks, that is helpful. The reason I was questioning whether we needed to "homeschool" is because I don't think they are accredited as a K program (we are fine with this, we're planning to work with our child at home, we just need some support to be able to keep our jobs). Would the lack of accreditation change your suggestion?

Lee Montessori. Really happy that they are being flexible. Our kid was pretty decent with the online classes and has been asking when they are going to restart. We plan to continue with the DL as much as we can, but love that the school is understanding that the online learning doesn't work with every kid and letting the families choose the best path for them. This is what they said:

We’ll leave the light on
Any family opting for alternatives (homeschool, daycare, pods) will retain their spot
Families will need to participate in regular check-ins (accountability + wellness)
Families can work with Guides and Specials Teachers for more ad hoc participation

Wow, I have to say I wouldn't like this approach for anything past K.

I'm surprised this would pass muster with OSSE and DCPCSB. Are they still expecting their full per-pupil allocation for kids who are enrolled in daycare or other programs?
