| ^^ it makes more sense for Montessori than other teaching styles. A lot of Montessori philosophy is that learning is self guided anyway. Kudos to Lee. |
but, this looks like it could be that a student goes the entire period of DL without any school-directed academic learning. Montessori or not, that doesn't seem like it's aligned with the goal of public education. |
| If Lee Montessori is taking that approach, OSSE needs to claw back all the per pupil funds going their way right now. |
I think OSSE has to be flexible with families during the pandemic. Especially for working parents of younger kids. Not all families are going to be able to implement distance learning, and the school system shouldn’t punish them for it. Instead, the city should be focused on getting these kids back to in person school. |
| Keeping your kid enrolled means more funding for the school. I would stay for the public good that creates, honestly. It's not like you or anyone else would be paying fewer taxes (unless this rolls into years and years, and DC actually pays attention and has closer oversight into accounting) |
Did you miss the part about them still needing to check with the teachers regularly and still having to do some "ad hoc participation". So you all with crib about your kids not being able to sit in front of a screen, and that you can't manage DL schedule while working from home, also crib about parents who have formed pods to solve this problem, crib about schools opening, crib about schools closing, crib about too much screen time and now crib about a school being flexible. I don't read the above statement as go play, we don't care, BUT as we care, we are here and we will work with you in these difficult times. Sheesh!! Also, these are just three lines from the whole presentation. So just consider the option that there is more nuance to it. |
Do you think this affects the popular charter schools that have long waitlists? I believe that the school would do this in good faith and to support all students and families. It's an unprecedented year, even if some families leave, there would be plenty that would come in if funding was all that the school cared about. |
“Crib”? WTF does that mean? Do you mean complain? I’m sorry, but it sounds awfully freaking loose. My school told us that OSSE is cracking down on attendance with multiple checkpoints for proof of attendance throughout the day plus a paper trail of student work, but Lee is going to “leave the light on” for kids who are just going to do — whatever? Why are my tax dollars paying for that??? Yeah. |

I think you’ll find your answer on this thread. I think it’s a good idea to pose a question- that can only be answered by talking to someone in DC gov/OSSE, just so you can vent (again...) and how much teachers are running this pandemic for you.

I think you are confusing the situation we are in now with a situation in which teaching and learning are actually effective. Why force kids to show up for appearances’ sake? |
I don't understand why everyone is assuming all DL be terrible again this fall. I think it will be hard and different, but I also know our school has been working hard to do this differently and better, and I'm going to trust them and know they are planning to learn and readjust as needed. What I don't think is good is that, according to what the PP shared, Lee seems to be making academic instruction opt-in only. (and yes i saw the defensive other PP who chastised us all for responding to the *only info we had*) Wellness checks are likely to be SEL focused only, which I agree is important. But, not requiring any academic learning for all grades seems like an over correction. |
