How much to pay a pod teacher?

Anonymous
Per hour? Per child? Is it just like a nanny or are they really teaching?

You need to know what you want before you hire someone!
A babysitter will be cheaper than a teacher.
Good tutors are paid between $90-150/hr.
Babysitting starts at what, $15/hr?
For more kids, the price per kid can decrease.

Depends what you're looking for and how many kids, and their ages. Our pod is strictly babysitting-- we handle the schoolwork at home prior to 11 AM, and the sitter does lunch, outside time, and free play or whatever she feels like doing. That's cheaper and you don't need the same level of ability from whomever you hire, so it's easier to find someone.

Our pod teacher will do all the teaching, lesson planning and extras. She will not be required to make lunches or “babysit.” Kids are 4th grade (4 kids all AAP so close in ability level). We are paying $1000 a week. That breaks down to $250 a week per family for 20 hours of instruction and 5 hours of planning time for her. She is a former teacher who didn’t feel like returning and taught 4th grade in FCPS for 15 years.

Her fee is set and if a family pulls out they are liable for paying for the rest of the semester. We are re-evaluating then. We have all unenrolled our kids as well so no need to keep up with zoom lessons.

Curious how you are handling taxes? Everyone paying off the books? It would be very hard for most professional teachers to have only 4K a month in income if they are paying tax on that income. Of course, you may find someone but this seems like a low price to pay if you are doing it legitimately.

We are using a nanny service. But she is only working 25 hours a week as opposed to 45+ in the classroom. This is fun money for her as she was planning on not teaching at all. Her husband has a job that can support both of them.

Is it worth unenrolling your kids? If you unenroll, don’t you have to submit a homeschool learning plan? Why do you need a pod for 4th grade? Most school districts have a full planned day online for older kids. Why would you do this? So your kids can play??? I’m thinking this is more of an option for PreK kids. I wouldn’t want to pay for a pod for 4th grade? What about standardized testing? That’s a huge burden to put on 1 teacher. But it seems like $50 per hour is the going rate. I’m thinking though you would have to find a teacher that is leaving the field or retiring. Because who else would do it, maybe a new teacher with no experience.

Not PP but if they are homeschooling there are not Standardized Tests requirements. Depending on their location they simply submit the paperwork which may require a lesson plan or curriculum outline for the year that is about it.
I do think it is crappy if they are not committed to doing this for the whole year if they are in public school. If they go back mis year the school will have lost funding for those kids that are not enrolled but still be forced to take them back. If they were in private before then whatever.
It certainly seem like way too much money and unnecessary for an average ability 4th grader but whatever.

Lol. Um that would not work for our school. Even at the elementary level they will be "in school" in front of a stupid computer from 9am-2pm. There are a few breaks and a lunch as well. But it is way too much time in front of a computer.. desk jobs suck for adults, this is just horrible for kids.
Yet, many parents are complaining that there kids won't be in school long enough!! Really.... ?!?!?!!? Like your kid 5-6-8-9 year old being on a computer means you can be absent.. they will be sadly mistaken.

I'm really surprised a quality teacher would go for a penny less than their normal salary (including benefits and taxes handled on the books) so kudos to you for getting to be cheapskates.

So your kids in this pod have all disenrolled from school? Will they be able to to get their AAP slots back if they return or is this homeschooling a permanent thing?

These teachers may not have better choices if they don’t want to teach DL.

But yes, taxes and the rest is complicated. Don’t do this under the table.

Great Point! What about leave and substitutes? The more I process these “Pods” teachers, the more ridiculous it seems. No more loves teaching over a screen but it makes more sense financially to just follow suit as a teacher.
