NATO is supposed to be a shared defense organization. Not a "you can eff around, spend nothing on defense, and America will come rescue you" organization. It is complicated (NP). Other sovereign nations are not toys. You don't just take them when you want them. Colonialism -which the US engaged in aplenty- is not something that is acceptable anymore.
