Also teaching this at home. |
I think the teachers have unrealistic demands placed upon them, so I don’t fault them for not having the time. That being said, it’s an important skill, so we are teaching at home. |
Cursive is archaic and obsolete. If schools are running out of relevant skills to teach, I don't have any particular objection. I mean, if they're still teaching square dancing, they should definitely teach cursive instead of that.
Printing gives you all of the same retention and fine motor skill benefits. Typing is clearly far more important to functioning in day-to-day life. Teach them how to sign their name and read the Constitution and call it a day. |
Good news OP, my 4th grader started cursive this week. |
I have a neurological disorder. Firing a gun would not be a challenge, handwriting is. I’m a preschool teacher and have worked very, very hard on it. It’s still not great. |
Maybe your penmanship isn’t great, but I’m willing to bet you can still read cursive. |
Oh, I hope they are still teaching square dancing. That was so much fun and I am all for anything that helps to develop all parts of the brain. Whoever decided that having kids sit at a desk all day long tapping at a keyboard without regard to the development of the brain through physical education should be taken out back and put down. There is so much more to learning than sitting still at a desk and tapping away and staring at a computer keyboard all day long. I am also a fan of handwriting as it too helps to develop the brain. It is also requires much more purposeful coordinated movement than typing on a keyboard. |
+1 I'd rather my kid learn square dancing then have to sit through an idiotic Flocabulary video. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You're funny. |
I have a kid with dysgraphia and this is offensive to me. It is very misunderstood and my child was abused by an elementary school teacher despite kid having an IEP and accommodations. My kid will never be able to handwrite normally. My spouse and I are not terrible parents who didn't teach our kid to write. |
Perhaps you should sign your child up for a dance class or team sport if you haven't already They have just as much focus on coordination and motor skills. |
I have a child with dysgraphia. We were told that cursive was easier for kids with this disability. This is a myth that has been debunked along with a lot of this other pseudo science that says cursive does something exceptional to the brain. |
Supposed to be? There is no requirement to teach cursive in Virginia schools. |
You are ignorant. You don't understand the first thing about motor skills. And yes, it is possible to have terrible fine motor skills and still be able to be proficient at firing a weapon. |
Agreed. That pp is a horrible person and would be a horrible boss. |
