Travis Gayles to resign - MoCo

Who cares if he’s in France? He’s vaccinated! And not like he took unvaccinated kids or anything. I hope Elrich didn’t ask for his resignation because of that.

Getting back to schools, you do realize MCPS gave Gayles the boot with their new opening plan this year. Specifically, it claims that they will ONLY follow STATE OFFICIALS with regard to moving to hybrid or virtual. Gayles had no say and was no longer welcome to guide MCPS. Thankfully MCPS realized what a disaster he caused last year. https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/reopening2021/guides/MCPS-Fall-Recovery-Guide-FINAL.pdf

I’m sorry. He wanted to keep you and your kids from getting sick. He may think that’s more important than your super important work zoom meeting, Jennifer, but it was his job to keep from overwhelming our health system, not make sure you had childcare.

Not Jennifer. Gayles had no problem with me sending them to childcare though. Didn’t hear a peep from him over my toddlers home daycare did we? Why is that? Gayles was wrong. Nothing to do with his race or sexuality. Jack Smith is a straight white dude and he sucked too.

Guess what? Daycares are regulated and have to adhere to many standard requirements that k-12 private schools do not. So your home daycare theoretically had oversight mechanisms in place that private schools did not have.

Really? Daycares are typically inspected once (maybe twice?) per year unless there’s a complaint. Most in home daycares I know of in MoCo never required masks for the kids even when they were supposedly required by the county. Including the one my DC attended (and no parent complained to the county).

The PP is talking about the learning hubs that popped up all over the county, where students gathered indoors to zoom into their classes with babysitters. For some reason, Gayles thought that was safer than a school.

Plus France is way better than FL right now which is where all the DCUM families are flocking!

Something's up since he didn't mention what his new job will be. People generally announce their decision to take a new position. They don't just resign in a void.

That's silly, PP, people resign all the time without announcing that they will have a big new fancy job.

I agree. Something very strange...and to use reasons about harassment from people a year ago over private schools is also ridiculous. He should have resigned then if that were the case.

Awesome! I wonder what other licensing and safety requirements these daycares are deciding are optional. Sounds like a great environment for a child too young to speak up! Glad you all are special and above the law and all. My kids are not daycare age but the one family I know IRL with a daycare age child actually did get exposed/got Covid from daycare teachers and narrowly avoided infecting high risk grandma pre-vaccine.

Remember when Gayles strongly advised against outdoor trick or treating?! As if taking a mini candy bar from a table on the lawn was going to spread covid. So many parents listen though. Dumb dumb dumb

Nobody had complete information back then, we thought that covid could spread on surfaces and that we had to avoid any and all gatherings.

Ours had fencing around it for a few months.

And you had to parent without a public swing set and slides? Oh nooooooo! Thoughts and prayers.

This county is truly the twilight zone. I traveled quite a bit this summer and even the bluest of states in the northeast are way more normal in how they handle covid. Hated coming back to this crazy place.

Same here. My family from CT and the Boston area are incredulous when they visit me here.

Which kind of refutes your earlier argument that daycares were more justified to be open than schools. Now it’s clear you not only have no personal experience with childcare, other than one family you dont know anyone else who does either.

FWIW, the state regulates childcares anyway (guessing you didn’t know that either) so how much teeth MoCo’s mask rules had was debatable. Which is probably why they weren’t citing family daycares for mask infractions.

It doesn’t refute my argument at all. It supports the idea that daycares should have been doing their best to follow the safety guidance public health officials provided rather than making up their own rules. Why on earth would you want caregivers to ignore public health guidance designed to protect your children? It is also not “clear” that I have “no experience with childcare.” I only said my kids are not currently daycare age.

No idea what you meant by this then:
“Guess what? Daycares are regulated and have to adhere to many standard requirements that k-12 private schools do not.”

You seem ignorant to the fact that an overwhelming amount of research and studies have supported exactly that. Prolonged closures have a devastating impact on learning loss, mental health, physical fitness, social isolation, etc. Increaed suicides, depression, obesity, vision issues, migraine headaches and on and on. But sure, it's ALL about COVID to the unsophisticated mind. Some people can't get over the tunnel vision to do a real world risk analysis. It isn't all about keeping people from getting sick. I wish it were that simple. It isn't.
