Better visit first and decide if the campus culture is for you. This is NOT a school for conservatives. |
It is a marketing gimmick. And no, their selection is definitely subjective, not objective fact. I mean, seriously. Personally, I would be worried about the continued financial viability of most of the schools in the book. These are exactly the schools facing bankruptcy. |
| St. Olaf. Really loved the school. Kid got into Kenyon, Mac, Oberlin, WM, Grinnell— but it was his strong second choice. |
| I will never understand the people who feel compelled to sh*t on the college choices of others. |
This is an oxymoron. |
True. They're usually the most insecure and want to justify to themselves the higher price they paid. |
Well, I'm confirming what you say and not. My kid DID end up choosing the higher ranked school. But my kid DIDN'T EVEN APPLY to dozens of others because the CTCL seemed better. Another kid in my family applied only to CTCLs because they seemed nicer. Frankly, if all the CTCLs became hot and attracted all the DCUM supper competitive people, they'd lose some of their character. |
I’d be okay with liberal campus culture amidst palm trees and sun. I’ve never been to Sarasota but the beaches are always ranked among the top in the US. It looks like a neat place. Their concept is a little different than most places, I can see how it might be “live changing.” Of course it’s not about me and my old lady preferences. My DC loves trying new things but practically makes himself sick worrying about failure. A program like this might be perfect for him. He also likes research, and this seems like a good place for that. He is very into environmental studies and biology, but he would love to, say, try a difficult math course just to see how it goes. Does anyone have any personal experience with this school? Would love to hear more. |

Search for other CTCL threads on DCUM and you’ll see they all devolve in this way — there is some poster who hates them for whatever reason.
Which, fine. Hate away. You do you. Anyway I went to Beloit. Got a ton of merit aid. Alternative colleges were Swarthmore, Claremont McKenna, and Carlton (some others too). Got aid at 2 of those, significant at one. Choose Beloit anyway. Loved it. It’s a warm, nurturing place with tons of opportunities — I spent my junior year abroad for no extra cost, and did a bunch of internships as part of my classes in other years. Ultimately I got a PhD (as did many of my friends). The ‘Beloit’ name has literally never ‘hurt’ my job or educational opportunities and I worked in DC for 10 years. |
Emma Gonzalez attends NCF and has written about it and an attempt to merge it with larger state U's. https://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/20200225/activist-emma-gonzalez-slams-new-college-bill-in-tweet-to-16-million-followers |
Not much of substance in that article. I suspect this move is necessary for the school’s finances. |
| For a school of its size, 46million+ seems like a healthy endowment. (NCF) |
| My son knew he wanted an LAC and initially targeted some highly selective colleges, such as Hamilton, Bates and Colorado College. In the end, he was more drawn to some of the CTCL schools, including Eckerd, St. Olaf, Rhodes and Puget Sound. He will be attending Whitman College, which he felt was his best fit, but he would have been happy to attend any of the others. |
He might also look at Eckerd. |
