Who should we elect Mayor of DC next?

I really wish Catania would have one in the last election. Things would’ve been much different I’m sure. Wish he would run again But that’s never gonna happen.

DC had about 10 years of reasonably adult governance through the Mayor's office and city council. David Catania, Carol Schwartz, Vincent Grey, Anthony Williams and others were moderating influences and put the city's finances in order. Then we got the Kwame Brown era & corruption came roaring back. Now you have the "progressive era" where grandstanding for social justice is all that really matters. Fortunately I saw which way the winds were blowing and escaped the city two years ago.

Any candidate to get crime and vagrancy under control.

You are conveniently missing the Graham and Evans corruption eras, which were around "back then" and continued for a long time. Their corruption pales in comparison to Brown and is only runner up to Barry in recent DC history. In any case, its not a competition. But lets not pretend that these guys were not thieving and stealing while everyone else was trying to be "adults".

The current era has got to be the worst though. I could not in my wildest dreams imagine that government could be run based on what slogans get the most likes and retweets any given day. It's like a Black Mirror episode, but instead of being ominous its just embarrassing.

Say what you want about corrupt politicians, but most of them at least knew how to butter the bread. Although they got a cut, they ensured that lots of other people were taken care of. These folks are only taking care of their social media presence.

Not Muriel Bowser. Next question.

Can we get a competent political moderate? I'm so pessimistic about the way our city is headed, and it's so painful to admit this because I've sunk all my resources here over two decades only to see DC slide back into garbage.

Can we recall Tony Williams? And can we exile Charles Allen? Is that possible? Some kind of Amish shunning at least? He's a menace to our city.

Better yet, can we form some kind of effective opposition to the progressives who are letting our city slide back into ruin?

Independents? Republicans? We are Republicans in DC (we would be Democrats anywhere else ). I always check off the Republicans on the ballot just to keep some kind of counter-weight to the progressives on life support.

It's funny how conservative this board leans. You are not winning anything in the near future. Especially because the conservatives that you do run are kinda shallow. It's like you're not even trying. Just nice to VA already.

I set down roots in DC during a period of dynamic optimism near the end of Anthony williams's tenure. Middle income families were welcomed and the public schools promised to support our kids appropriately. The city was meant to both grow and grow up. But Vince Gray was the beginning of the end of our dream. He made it clear we were not welcome and the resources we pay for were no longer intended for us. It has only gone downhill from there.

What you're seeing here is that anonymity relieves us of the pressure of saying only what you want to hear. We need to start actually voting for the city we want to live in. And voting against a new decline of urban life. I believe in cities. They should not be abandoned to the criminals and the people who can't bring themselves to get out of their own way. And they should be places educated people can feel comfortable raising their families even if they need to use the public schools.

Do you really want to see pre-boom dc happen again? It was a horrible mess. We know how this plays out because it happened a few decades ago in cities all over the country. Why on earth would we sign up for that again?

You know that we are not socially conservative right? We are just not San Francisco militant progressives. Get to know us. If you liked Tony Williams, thats a 'conservative' in DC.

Vince Gray was actually a great mayor who kept too many Fenty people in his administration. I loved old DC. People cared about each other and the city was more communal. Yes, crime was higher. Now, DC is just a weird gentrified soul-less place.

I agree. It’s so bizarre to think that conservatives don’t win in DC when Bowser is mayor.

What’s interesting to me is how “progressive” DC was so upset by Barry pushing through the MetroTech development. But Bowser has turned half the city into MetroTech and the “progressives” now think it’s good? MetroTech was at the time considered Barry corruption at its worst. There was an exhibit in the Building Museum for years lamenting how terrible it was. I guess the secret is that you just have to be a woman and all of a sudden anything you do is “progressive”? I honestly need someone to help me understand this.
