What happens if a delivery driver hurts my dog if dog is aggressive?

You're a little too late if the delivery guy already has a bat in hand, aren't you?

Plus, most delivery carriers are under a lot of stress to deliver quickly. Your expectation that they will have time to throw your dog a treat and make friends is not realistic. There is also a good chance you will stop getting deliveries from this company.

Op here. If out dog bit a driver I agree we would absolutely be responsible.

What is wrong with you, OP? A driver should not have to feel threatened.

Maybe an electric fence too and a gate. That’s what we did. Our barking dog was sprayed with pepper spray. Now the drivers don’t step foot in our property. They deliver to the box outside the gate.

You’re one of those dog owners who think the world revolves around you. The poor delivery people shouldn’t have to deal with your dog. Good grief.

Our dog is all bark and no bite, but I admit she can definitely seem aggressive to delivery drivers. I work from home and sometimes the dog is outside when a driver pulls up. I always go out there immediately and call the dog to me. In the intervening minute or two, most drivers toss a few treats out and the dog is fine. One regular just ignores her while our dog barks at him. Mail carrier honks her horn until I come out.

The other day our stupid dog ran barking at the truck, and when I went out there, the driver was facing her with an aluminum baseball bat. He put the bat down as soon as he saw me. I called the dog, and it was fine.

I get it. I think everyone has a right to self defense against a dog. I STRONGLY PREFER that drivers would have a non-lethal and non-injurious method like pepper spray or an air horn. But I get it.

So, what happens if the driver gets scared and takes a swing? Can they be sued for damages? (In a situation where the dog is NOT actively attacking, just acting aggressive and scary).

What is wrong with you?

Yes, if your dog is that aggressive that the delivery driver would feel the need for a baseball bat, they do not get paid enough to deal with you and your clear lack of taking care of your dog!

Drivers should not have to deal with protecting themselves when they come to your home.

Civil suit and you will lose

OP I can’t believe you let your dog do this to delivery people who are just trying to do their jobs. You think your dog is all bark and no bite, but you don’t know that.

Love to see DCUM unity!

If the dog gets close enough to the driver for the driver to hit the dog with a bat, the dog is not “all bark.”

I don't carry treats because (1) that rewards the incompetent owner for being an irresponsible dog owner, (2) it encourages the dog to approach delivery drivers expecting a treat (dogs are very programmable), and (3) I'm not cutting into my bottom line to provide treats for dogs who shouldn't even be loose in the first place! JMFC you sound entitled as hell! Secure your dog when expecting deliveries!

Even if a dog is all bark and no bite, I don't care how "friendly" YOU claim your dog is, IT needs to be SECURED! Or you don't get your delivery from me! Not sorry that's not the answer you want to hear.

I make sure my CAT is secure when expecting deliveries, and cats run away from delivery drivers as a general rule.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???? The issue here isn't fedex, UPS, the mail person, amazon, it's YOU.

Get some self awareness OP. Geez!

This is ENTIRELY your fault, OP. I really cannot fathom why you cannot see this.

Keep your dog elsewhere. Humans doing their work and coming onto your property are entitled to not being approached by a strange dog. If your dog gets hurt, it's YOUR FAULT.

get an electric fence. Your bigger concern should be YOUR liability if your dog bites a FedEx, UPS, USPS, etc., driver.

You are responsible for the the vet bills. If the carrier feels threatened, they are entitled to defend themselves and if your dog gets injured, it is your responsibility.

I think delivery agents should just skip houses where there are outdoor dogs. Take the packages back to the warehouse and make the patrons come and pick them up. Or, they can attempt redelivery and if there are three attempts with the dog there, then they return to sender.
