What happens if a delivery driver hurts my dog if dog is aggressive?

I agree that a delivery driver has a right to protect themself,
But why wouldn't you just drive away if there was a dog that was SO scary you feel you need a baseball bat? Call the number on the package? Mark it as undeliverable? Throw it at the fence and don't get out of the car? I mean there are a lot of options. Sounds like a guy just itching to use his weapon.

OP you say your dog is all bark and no bite. I think you owe it to your DOG to do a better job protecting her from people in the front yard. She cannot be out there unsupervised. Or get a second fence that keeps the walkway area dog free. If anyone - including your dog- gets hurt, it is your fault. You have seen the danger.

Delivery people should not need to feel afraid of your dog. You may know that your dog is “all bark” but delivery people haven’t met your dog

You need to either keep your dog inside or out of the path of potential delivery people or you need to get deliveries routed elsewhere.

I say this as the owner of a large but very gentle dog. We kept him out of all mailman and delivery peoples path by either keeping him in the backyard or inside.

It isn’t a question of whether you should be worried about your dog. As another poster said you should he more concerned about a delivery person suing you. Even if your dog is gentle if they break their ankle running away from your tooth baring canine, they would have a very strong case.

But your biggest problem is a major lack of empathy of any kind - why do you need to post to understand that this is sometimes basic human consideration.

People like you should not be allowed to have pets.

If you're expecting deliveries, dog stays inside. He has no idea that you're 50 pound dog is all bark and no bite. No the driver cannot be sued for defending himself against a dog who ran at him barking.

I'm a dog owner and really dislike clueless owners like you.

It’s people like you who calls animals to get injured because you set them up for these kinds of dangerous precarious situations And it’s gonna be your fault when your dog gets busted upside the head.

If you don't want to be considerate of delivery drivers, stop ordering things and go out and get sh!t yourself.

+1

Agree. Either put your dog out of harm's way or leave a sign to drop the package at the driveway.

Plus, most delivery carriers are under a lot of stress to deliver quickly. Your expectation that they will have time to throw your dog a treat and make friends is not realistic. There is also a good chance you will stop getting deliveries from this company.

Op here. If out dog bit a driver I agree we would absolutely be responsible.

Years ago when I was a stupid child of about 7 or 8 I was taunting a barking dog from the other side of his fence. I got close to the fence and the dog bit me in the face. Nobody, and I include my family and the dog's family, thought that was the dog's fault, it was my fault.

Even so, if a yard fence is the only thing between your barking aggressive dog and all kinds of people, including stupid children, you are asking for trouble. I'm pretty sure these days the same event would end in a lawsuit.

If a cop had to come to your house for some reason and viewed the dog as a threat they would be within their rights to shoot it. So there's that too.

You should ask my neighbor about having to visit the post office to get their mail, after their very nice dog bite the mailman.

Stop letting your dog stay out front to scare all the delivery people!!! You are 100% at fault here.

You’re giving all of us dog owners a bad name. What is wrong with you????!!!

You would be the only one sued in this situation.

Omg. Your mail carrier has to sit there and honk their horn until you come out? And they have to throw treats, which they are likely paying for out of their own pockets?

Your dog is interfering with their ability to do their job. Do the right thing and keep it inside, or fence off an area in the backyard.

Are you implying that you wouldn't be responsible otherwise? Why don't you call your local police and see where they stand on this? After all, these are the police that are going to be responding if there is a situation and either the delivery driver or you call them.
