Big universities where Greek life is not huge? "Safety School" a plus!

Some may disagree with this recommendation but University of Michigan is only 17% Greek, and getting smaller. You wouldn't know that on football game days but otherwise it's lower profile. And obviously 83% of the undergrads aren't in greek life so there are plenty of non-greek things to get involved in. Not a safety for most kids though.

University of Wisconsin - Madison about 10% Greek. You’d only know about it if you were into it. Otherwise, it’s not at all part of the environment. Though some majors seem to draw more students from the Greek system than others.

Aren't most kids entering college before they start drinking/forming an opinion on whether or not they are drinkers? Or am I being too naive?

Some kids already know they don't want to drink because of religious/moral convictions.

Or they've seen that people whose only social life is about getting drunk are stupid and/or dangerous. My son's childhood group of friends turned into the kids who just want to hang out in a basement with parents'stolen alcohol. He chose to find a different group of friends. He's a confident kid and has no interest in joining a frat or any other group that is focused around getting drunk every weekend. He's fine with having a beer or two but any group with pressure about drinking to excess would be a huge turnoff.

+1. I was just about to make the same suggestion. While there are plenty of sororities and fraternities, the student body is so large that the social scene doesn't revolve around the Greek system. Plenty of us were "independents" and it wasn't a big deal. There are so many students that it's easy to find your people. That said, it is a big sports school but it sounds like your child is interested in sports.

I was going to suggest this as well. DS is currently a business major there. Not exactly a safety for business majors as you have to apply once at school. But he loves it there.

Looks like it's about a 15% acceptance rate? Not likely a safety for the vast majority of students.
