Is GDS too woke?

Anonymous
I see the exact type of agenda at the local public high school that my children attend. There is zero room for differing viewpoints. My son said he couldn’t apply for an after school job at Chik Filet because he would get so much flack from one of his teachers. It’s over the top.

Are here any Lutheran schools in the DMV?

I have never heard them say that white kids are targeted at all. The education is amazing, Jewish/minority kids are super welcome there, and there is no targeting of anyway based on the color of their skin. If anything, I would expect it is more diverse and welcoming than Milton -- the general go-to school.

Agree that 80%++ of the white people there are Jewish; very large component and clique. Has no bearing on the off-the-rails extreme political and slanted environment.

And I can’t help but believe that this is why so many here love to crap on the school. My kid loves it. He’s not a SJW at all. We are not Jewish. We are POC. We feel welcome and the education provided is excellent. My DC has a very balanced way to look at the world in general.

We’re really curious what the mix of professions is 5-10 years after coming out of GDS. Do they all work at activist NGOs or performing arts?

Like most liberal arts students, they wind up as investment bankers or corporate lawyers.

More like unemployed, anti Capitalists or non profit people, no trust funds there.

You'd be surprised where a lot of people with this type of background end up. The critical thinking you learn with a liberal arts education ends up valued by corporate America and, at some point, people transition to a paying career.

I don’t think having 4+ years of anti corporate America and anti-constitution classes and attitudes translates well to wanting to work at nor working at a company at all.

I want to know the data to answer the question as well.

Here's a list of GDS-affiliated businesses - a lot of DC favorites, including Child's Play toy store and a lot of restaurants. https://www.gds.org/community/gds-connected-businesses I would say capitalism is alive and well amongst GDS families.

Really. Your kid wont apply for an after school job bc theyre scared of their teacher? how would the teacher know? who cares?

I’d agree to a point.
There should still be a strong understanding that disagreement within a subgroup that feels strongly about social justice (that whole generation mostly, which is a great thing) is okay and should be encouraged. Discussion and critical thinking have really diminished in the era of cancel culture and I hope that things swing back toward middle in regards to open civil discussion being seen as the way towards progress, instead of all must think the same attitudes that are unfortunately more and more present as a fear based reaction in the Trump and post-Trump era. Is GDS too woke? I don’t know, but I think it is important to ask if a student would feel comfortable raising an alternative argument to reparations at that school, just one example, or if they would feel uneasy doing so in fear of being labeled “bad” rather than someone open to difficult and nuanced discussion.

Fox talking point. Who cancelled Rudy or the My Pillow Guy or Sydney Powell? Hint: it wasn't "the woke crowd"

NP. No, it’s not just a Fox talking point. I am about as liberal as you can get, but believe in critical, nuanced thinking. Woke culture is knee-jerk, black and white, and cult-like in its thinking. You have to agree with everything or you’re a despicable non-human who deserves to be trashed and canceled.

Critical thinking in a free society means you can disagree with someone without wanting them dead. The right and Republicanism has succumbed to cancel culture, but so has a large chunk of the left. This is how we ended up polarized and unable to engage in civil discourse.

My DC was accepted to GDS, but my DH and I were turned off by the woke culture. The irony is that the one of the students we spoke with who was not wealthy talked about how of all the things they can talk about, no one can really talk about the difference between the wealthy and the poor students at the school.

This is not unique to GDS, but the cognitive dissonance is stronger there because of how GDS positions itself as a social justice warrior institution.

So some we didn’t even give it any consideration.

Sigh, you never went to a city high school, did you? This is unrelated to GDS and not the above poster, but clearly you do not understand how chik filet a is problematic bc of its stance on LGBTQ issues. Many Wilson teens will not eat there because they’ve don’t support the chain, and yes, they check their friends. I know of one snarky teacher who would mock kids- we wakes up and chooses violence most days— a well-known, bitchy, snarky a-hole. I think her kid is right.

Interesting. My kids' friends at a DC school near a Chick Fil A love to eat there, and congregate there. I think they carry the cups around campus just to stand out a little.

Why? When you’re subjected to the woke police 24/7 I can absolutely see how kids would think this was “cool.”

It’s not cool to carry around paper cups all day as a passive aggressive f— you to your classmates. It’s just sad and small.

No. What is “sad and small” is that it’s an issue to anyone in the first place.

I gave a CFA gift card for independent school auction and the school didn't put it in the auction bc it wasn't PC enough. I thought it's something kids eat and was a good idea. Always need to be focused on the politics...
