Anyone hear from Michigan yet?

I saw a couple of posts on CC where aid was mentioned. The website says financial aid announcements will go out before April.

I turned down Ivy (not HYP) to attend Michigan but it was pretty clear on my arrival that the majority of the student body was not Ivy material. However, the majority of the Honors Program probably was.

I was a little worried that my kids wouldn't make the cut. Many of my Michigan friends' kids have ended up at colleges like Minnesota or Wisconsin or Indiana because Michigan has become such a tough nut to crack. But my kids all decided not to apply to Michigan. They all thought it was just too big. Not even the Residential College seemed small enough for them. Since they all have closets full of maize and blue clothing and even learned to fall asleep in their cribs to the soothing sound of "Hail to the Victors," this was disappointing.

Now I'm a SLAC parent. That has its benefits. I loved Michigan but it really is very big.

Isn't the undergraduate population around 10,000 larger than a decade or two ago? Michigan resident with a graduate degree from there. Don't get me wrong, I love UM and Ann Arbor, but these stats are ridiculous. One B and it's all over?

My kid was deferred from Michigan, accepted to Wisconsin (computer Science). I'm sure many are in the same boat. He is thinking of writing to Michigan to say he has continued interest.

Should he say something like "I was accepted to Wisconsin, but I would really prefer Michigan because I believe I will get a better education at Michigan" or would that be a bit too direct?

OK to say that, but don't name Wisconsin, just say "although I've been accepted elsewhere . . . "?

Mine have not mentioned other schools. They really don’t care. Just focus on *I* am still interested and here is why/ what I can offer/ why I fit in at Michigan. And certainly don’t think mentioning a lesser ranked school will be helpful.

Be very specific about interest in a particular program and why you are suited to the program. Name-drop a professor and course of interest. Identify opportunities unique to Michigan. Worked for my kid in EA round.

Does anyone have information about Michigan Honors Program? Does it make the big school seem a little smaller?

The school at UM my kid was deferred from required another 250 essay of continued interest.

Wisconsin is a great school and a fantastic university atmosphere. Don't undersell it. Yes, Michigan has higher rated programs - it's a legit top 20 school. But other than UM and Northwestern, Wisconsin is the best school in the BigTen and is a highly regarded school for recruiters and grad schools.

My DC did it. I have posted about it before. Yes it makes a big school smaller but there are other ways to do that too. DC enjoyed the honors program the first year because of the honors only seminars and discussion groups. It was less important the second year. The preferred freshman housing was a big plus.

I'd add that I went to UMich and loved the size, you just have to get involved to have pockets of community. It's a really active student body so there is no shortage of orgs/interests with which to get involved, and I'll say the experience has served me well later on.

Same boat.

DC already professor/program/class "name dropped" (i.e., DC really looked at websites and published research and talked about overlapping interests) in the original supplemental essays. DC also gave other why Michigan reasons.

What else could they possibly be looking for? Especially with so many other deferred students, what could DC write that could stand out?

I don't blame DC for being flummoxed.

It is so tough for these kids. The competition is fierce and the AO are looking for any new info to give the kid the nod. Include any new awards or new experiences (classes, research or even a conversation your DC may have had with a professor) that are major/school related. The mid year report w an upward trend will help as well. Good luck!

Understand, UM is receiving in excess of 75,000 applications. They likely only have reviewed a small portion of those so far, with some being accepted and others being denied. Most of the deferred probably haven't been read yet . As they review, they release additional tranches of letters to applicants, each month, through May or June.

Another deferral here. Kid has straight As in a magnet (4 AP courses) + an A in a dual enrollment college course, plus national merit scholar since the application went in. She is hoping to change from deferral to acceptance.

They probably assume UM isn't her first choice.
