Hyde Park is definitely not located in the most beautiful part of Chicago. I think many people believe it's near Lincoln Park or something and don't do their research.
Read the crime reports. I agree 100% with previous posters on the common confusion between UIC and U of C. |

It's a freaking college. Not your spouse. You get in, get an education, and move on. Like every school it had its pros and cons. Like any other college, attending it will neither make you Jesus or Hitler. Most of what you become in life is up to you, not a goddamn school.
Most alumni that attend.any school will be average While this is a little dated, I would encourage everyone to read this book by economist Thomas Sowell. Really take about how to pick a right college intelligently http://www.leaderu.org/choosingcollege/sowell-choosing/toc.html |
I would say 1/3 of the kids at UChicago are like this |
It takes literally an hour to get to the beautiful downtown Chicago parts you think of when you think "Chicago" via public transportation. Chicago is the capital of the Midwest, so obviously the Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa kids find it impressive — but to Seattle, LA, SF, NYC, DC and Boston kids, it's just another city. And it feels provincial and so far away from other major cities. And the weather is brutal and depressing. |
Very scientific. Thanks. |
For the record I'm not a UChicago alum or booster, but LOL at anyone from DC, Boston, SF, or SEATTLE of all places to look down their nose on Chicago. Chicago is bigger and more interesting than all of those cities. You East Coasters really are sheltered lot, aren't you? Chicago's a world-class city. And the weather is no more brutal and depressing than Boston. |
I'm originally from NYC and I'd place Chicago comfortably head and shoulders above any of the cities PP listed. But still a tier below NYC
|
Well, I went to UChicago so blame the school if you are not impressed by my quantitative skills. I stand by my previous statement though. |
How is this "handy"? Those are literally the top posts in the College Confidential subforum for UChicago and the level of self-trumpeting and boosterism is off the charts in just about every post in that subforum. You don't need to do any special research to get to those links. You just click and read the comments and oh boy that made my holiday. |
Like UVA! Go 'Hoos! |
You go to other websites to slam U Chicago why exactly? You’re so invested. How many colleges are you actively disparaging? Just can’t imagine why you care. |
Finally, someone on DCUM admits to being an idiot. |
Whatever. Look at the graduation surveys of top colleges. City of Chicago draws Midwest kids - while Ivy, Duke, Stanford kids go to the coasts; in other words, Chicago is not high on their list. Even the top Northwestern, UChicago and UMich kids don't end up in Chicago. Chicago is certainly as good as it gets in the Midwest but it's just not that special to coastal kids. |
This is about as stupid as saying, "Look, only a fraction of Duke grads end up staying in Durham, NC!! Must mean something, eh?" And explain to me how going to college in Chicago is any "worse" than going to school in, IDK, Durham, NC or Boston or Philadelphia? Or, good forbid, the Berkshires in podunk Massachusetts? Don't be so small-minded, it's not a good look. |
Of course - but the particular dolt who always shows up with the silly ROI argument has been exposed on this website and others for its rants. An agenda well beyond chiming in. |
