| Do academies move every player to every position in every formation? Part of development is “playing different styles”. |
Soooo... play to your strengths and the opponent’s weaknesses? Yes! If results are what you care about vs. player development, that is the answer. All this is good for both teams; the better the competition and rivalry, the better they will develop with appropriate coaches. It is good for each to play opposite styles so long as each can adapt over time. And I think it is terrific if people from outside the clubs are going to observe and decide for themselves vs. simply reading gasbags like me on this forum. We did the same thing and made our choice, but are not religious about this stuff at all. |

Every SYC team i've seen play does this. The Alexandria teams i've seen on the girls side definitely know what it is to build out of the back - whether or not they accurately execute. You can easily see who is coached better. IMO SYC has better/more raw talent but Alexandria has better coaching. |
| It’s funny how we denigrate clubs by claiming they get results because of “kick and run” tactics. I suspect 90% of the people on these forums have no clue what they are talking about. If you believe a style of play is superior, but it never performs - is it really better? The excuses are getting thick... |
| The level of retardation from anonymous soccer big brains is too much for me. |
My kids started at a kick and run club. Moved to a possession Club and now I’m ready to go back to a club that is not devotional about any one style. My kids have been building out of the back and playing possession for 3 years but Club allows for little individuality, especially if you are any other player but a forward. Our kids go horizontal and to the back waaaay too much. They need to penetrate and press more. I want my kids as individuals taking chances. I see a benefit from learning many different styles—so mine have been coached and trained by Dutch, Spanish, Latin American and English coaches. I go out of my way to expose them to many different styles of play and they can incorporate from each. I also feel learning to play for different coaches and different kids makes them better overall. |
And this is why soccer in the U.S. and even this area is a joke. What professionals do you see using kick and run as a strategy? LMAO ugh. And before you talk about this being U12 vs MLS... when do you think real professionals learn to play? |
Nobody needs to make excuses for a result in a game involving tweens. This is absurd. I will tell you the same thing when your boys take an a$$-pounding at the end of the year from smarter kids who know how to play, just as in years past. And I am sure you will put your boys in six or seven tournaments in your never ending search for a trophies and gotsoccer points. And Arlington will still beat you anyway. So stew on that. |
Correct, they played twice this fall season already. The syc 2008 boys won 2-0 the first time and 3-0 the second time. Alexandria beat syc 07s 3-1 I'm don't have a kid in either Alexandria or SYC, but I came to watch the 07 boys play this match because my friend's son plays for Alexandria. Anyway, there was a big issue with game. The substitution rules were new and unclear. SYC subbed out some of their best players and, because of the new rules of only 3 moments and no returns in the same half or something, SYC's players weren't allowed to sub back in and the Alexandria coach made a big stink and wouldn't let it slide. As a result, Alexandria was able to come back and win this match as they were down 0-1 at half and struggling. Now...I I'm just saying this because you guys are all nuts. I just want to point out that something as simple as a new sub rule could really affect a game. And by the way...who really gives a shit if Arlington is better than Alexandria is better than SYC, etc. You guys are worrying about the wrong crap. You guys probably are in debt because you bought a BMW that you couldn't afford just because your neighbor bought one. LOL, SYC coach did not know the rules and could not do his hockey style substitutions every two minutes and his team ran out of steam. |
I saw neither game, but have read enough on this forum to get that most posters who scream about kick and run are really just poor observers of the game and don't like a direct style of play out of the counterattack, lumping it all together as "kick and run", lamenting kids who can run all day long are just faster and hope that they'll come back to masses in their future fitness. Fast, direct play is certainly style, not just in soccer, but many other sports including basketball. Go check out VCU basketball and their Havoc press defense if you want to see a simple application, or 40 minutes of Hell from Arkansas defense. But since this is a soccer forum, I'll leave you this recent link to read about Liverpool directly from themselves. Any analysis that starts and ends with "they were faster and just kicked the ball past us" and doesn't consider if that was just direct is missing out. Go watch a few of these games and watch how quickly the balls gets played through to space by the backs straight up top with a clean ball and proper pace and direction. That's skill matched with athleticism and fitness. Silly Americans dads. https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/liverpool-jurgen-klopp-premier-league-17803219 |
| Maybe watch them play before spouting off. Kick and run is absolutely SYC's MO. I watched an entire game and did not see a single coordinated attack. Not a single one. It was literally boom ball to a fast forward that waited for it. On both goals they scored. |
Perhaps that brilliant Alexandria coach should have told his central defender to drop 3 yards and not get caught cheating forward and ball watching. |
If a U12 striker is bigger, faster, stronger, why should he be forced to play out the back, create a build up, play the way you face... why not just “play”? |
Trust me, most people have no idea about “packing”. |

No actually MLS Next put out conflicting information on the substitution rules at first. It really wasn't his fault. It's unbelievable that Alexandria and the center referee wouldn't allow the subs. But anyway.... |
