With the disclaimer about post 2014 hires, you can see some pension figures here:
https://www.teacherpensions.org/blog/what-average-teacher-pension-my-state |
Added to the above, VA teachers get social security. DC teachers don’t get SS, so that's why their figure is $48k. 48k for life is pretty good. I'm a fed hired after they changed the system where they auto deduct a larger percentage of our paychecks than people who joined before 2012, to receive the same amount of retirement benefits. Most federal employees currently pay 0.8% of salary into the Federal Employees Retirement System, while those hired after 2012 pay 3.1% or 4.4% depending on when they were hired. |
We pay almost $1000/month for a family premium for Carefirst. Those insurance costs seem like a good benefit to me. |
Now you have to tell us your 401k matching and salary. |
Of course. Did anybody say it isn’t? The PP that shared the link even wrote that it wasn’t a complaint. |
Yes, it's good, but not cheap or free as some people seem to think. Several people I know pay less in the private sector. |
I understand. The “sounds like a good benefit to me” post sounded like a comment made in response to someone saying the contrary. I admit I could have been reading a tone into it. |
We get PAID summers off? Really? Hmmm. I need to speak to someone at payroll, STAT! ![]() |
I make 82k as a 10th year teacher which is perfectly fine with me. About half of my friends make more than me but obviously they are working 12 months and much longer hours. I also always find odd jobs in the summer when I feel like making extra money but I’m very comfortable with my salary. Too many teachers complain in my opinion. |
Is that masters, PhD, or bachelors? Are you in LCPS, FCPS, FCCPS, APS, PWCPS? |
Interesting. I’m a 10th year FCPS teacher making $73k. Are you in Arlington? I know FCPS is lowest of the region for mid career teachers. |
Oh, and that’s with my masters. I was a career switcher. |
