How is first day going for DCPS kids?

Ummmm we are at Dcps and school doesn’t start till Wednesday. Mon and tues are reserved for parent teacher child 25 minute meetings. Why do I get the feeling that we’re the only school in this boat? Dcps. K and 2nd grade.

My kids’ school ‘started’ today, but until Thursday, it is only getting-to-know-you stuff, which isn’t very effective online. Better just to skip it.

We too, at an EOTP charter, have only parent -teacher meetings (one 30 minute meeting) Monday-Tues, then a single asynchronous task on Wednesday. Nothing real until Wednesday.
And we will have a 2 hour specials and optional activities break in the middle of the day, every day. would rather that be at the end of the day.

6th grader's day went well.

We had a rocky start, but I’m optimistic. My kid’s K class has 27 kids, which surprised me. I thought it would be lower, but this is our first foray into DCPS.

Distance learning is garbage

That’s too large. What school? Has to be WOTP.

Also, the teacher only calls on the kids she can "see".

They need to be able to SEE all their 25 students like on zoom. Students need this too. Can't they just use zoom and have everyone choose gallery view?!

I’m a DCPS teacher as well as parent, and not being able to see all the kids is awful. I kept the class list and checked off kids as they participated so I got everyone, but it’s hard when you can’t see them. My DS couldn’t raise his hand or chat, and he wasn’t one of the ones that showed up in the screen. In the spring we used zoom, but admin says we’re stuck with teams this year. We also had issues with chat and hand raising not working for students.

It was close to worthless and ridiculous to spread out 15-20 minute meetings to prevent a solid chunk of outdoor play for younger kids.

+1. I blame parents for this misguided effort to imitate a full day when 1/2 or less would do.

I'm hoping there is some amazing content and teaching, because first day was just the most boring meetings ever. Let her turn off the video and play with legos while the meetings went on in the background. Good prep for work zoom calls

I'm so sorry. That's pretty traumatic for a kid.

I also just wanted to say I'm so sorry. This sounds so hard.

+10000
Why TF would we try to mimic a full working day for kids? Why is my 7 year old on the screen on and off from 8:30-3:30? This is unhealthy for him and I fully plan on skipping many lessons once things get going, after telling the principal what a misguided attempt this was to give parents babysitting during the day. I'm sorry, this is terrible, I can't imagine what it's like working a demanding job and helping your kids with DL, but it's not the school's job to keep your kid occupied. They literally cannot watch your child, you must do it. So yeah, like, wear a mask, vote trump out, and then maybe we can have our lives back.

What school has 27 for K? That’s a lot...

There is an update for teams that allows you to see everyone in “preview mode”. Google - teams update. The July 31st update walks you though how to do it. Share the info w your teacher . I’m a teacher and just found it today!

I know Teams has a lot of features but it is really clunky for live classes. Parents it would be great if you spoke up to your admin if Teams isn’t as good as Zoom. I can do so much more with my class with much more ease than in Teams. And before people comment I know how to see my whole class in Teams, mute the chat, do breakout groups, etc. But Zoom functions so much better for those things than Teams.

Dcps isn’t going to let you use Zoom. We begged all spring. Not happening. Make sure your teams is updated and the features are turned on. That’s as good as its going to get.
