How is first day going for DCPS kids?

Things went really smoothly for my first grader. Lots of live lessons with short games to get them moving around. I was very impressed with his teacher and how organized everything was. Let’s see what happens with my PK3 child on Thursday.

I don’t know. The whole thing is so depressing. My K’er and 2nd grader are fine but it’s so lame. I hate computers.

This. Why in the world isn’t this obvious?

The grass is not greener.

I’m not sure what you mean. A shorter morning meeting would absolutely be greener.

My kindergartener did great- she has missed her teachers so was excited to see them. The teacher doesn’t know how to mute all, there were other kids yelling, interrupting, etc so that was frustrating. But overall I’m glad that she has a little more structure in her day now.

I hated that my kids were tethered to the computers from 8:30-3:30 with only a few 15-30 minute breaks instead of lumping it together so we could actually go outside today. Would've been nice to get out in the morning since it's been raining all afternoon. Now they are punching each other on the couch and I can't give them TV or Epic books because they've been on the screen all day.

I'm grateful for this thread because I'm realizing I have it pretty good, considering. I'm at a DC charter and we "only" have two hours of live instruction with long breaks between...it felt like WAY TOO MUCH (my DS is 2nd grade). But all day live instruction...I just can't even with that. Horrific.

Also, the teacher only calls on the kids she can "see".

They need to be able to SEE all their 25 students like on zoom. Students need this too. Can't they just use zoom and have everyone choose gallery view?!

I have a 1st grader in a DCPS and we don't have "all day live instruction". there is a 30 minute morning meeting, a 45 minute reading/writing lesson, a LONG break, and then a 45 minute math lesson. then an option special at the end of the day.

My Wilson 10th grader had a great day. No complaints.

We were done well before noon (3rd) and it wasn't straight through. Without morning meeting the longest occupied block we would have had is 20 minutes. No work got done. I'm not complaining, it was the first day and we I'll adjust. But take away morning meeting and our family is completely screwed. The absolute last thing we want is a five minute waste of time morning meeting that is not immediately followed by instruction time.

EOTP elementary. 2 & 4. Both had surprisingly good days. It felt like a good combination of live instruction, independent work, and breaks. I am sure it will get old, but they both had a pretty enjoyable day. I was impressed at how much better it was- keeping kids interactive, paying attention, moving during class, etc.

Really shows how each school is approaching DL differently.

Did your kids not have problems navigating between Canvas, Teams, and Clever? My class couldn’t figure out how to open a web browser to type a URL. I think most just started by going to Teams, not Canvas, but then couldn’t get any of the other links/materials.

My first grader at a charter had one hour in the morning, optional special, and 30 minute meeting in the afternoon. Total of around 2 hours. Although I don’t necessarily think more is better, I also don’t know if she will really learn much since only 30 minutes of that is small group.
