Harvard is a private institution. Absent violating the law it can choose any path it wishes. There are many nonprofits that work solely with non-citizen clients. That’s not the test. And research funding is because the government thinks it’s worth it to invest. And Harvard has, simply put, more money than most countries. So it has some remarkable independence. in my view, it has used that independence to make a very high-quality education available to people with relatively low incomes, and has done a lot of good. People may think otherwise, but it is an independent, very wealthy institution that makes its own decisions.

If Harvard truly wants to support URMs, they can do better. They can invest in the URM communities k-12 to better prepare URM students. They have the resources.

Harvard has its own mission. To educate future leaders be they URMs or not. Many Harvard URMs graduates do focus on developing URM communities. Also the URM average family income is higher than the average family income of white students and has been for a very long time. There are many URM kids at Harvard that are NOT poor or on any financial aid.

We don't ask religion anymore on the application anymore, people. Judaism is a RELIGION not a race. There are black and asian Jews these days. White jews do not experience what blacks do in this country in terms of racism. We need more black and URM in elite colleges. Period.

Unless you are a first gen candidate it takes an enormous amount of resources (excellent feeder type school public or private, opportunity to exceed at extracurricular activities outside of school and a available/ supportive adult to cart you to a ton of activities/tutors/coaches/teachers for 12 years as well as $ to pay for forgoing) so you end up with Nigerians, Ghanaians and high income AA (Many are the product of boarding schools and top privates.. they have the scores and grades to be competitive) If you are not first gen the URM testing and grades stats are similar to the white students stats. In the 80s and 90s it was primarily UMC African American.
