UVA - drinking culture?

If a student wants it it's there.

The college does not make the drinker drink.

Any parent who thinks their child's college has zero or lower drinking is not in touch with reality.

I went to a Catholic university and when I visited friends for big party weekends, I was always struck by how much more we drank at my school...but we weren’t as boastful about the partying. Don’t be afraid of people who say their school is a party school. You can be sure the school is aware and providing alternative events. Be wary of the ones that don’t talk about it at all.

Some schools have bigger drinking culture than others. This is especially true for rural schools where there's nothing else to do i.e. Dartmouth, Washington & Lee, UIUC, etc. Other schools have a reputation of drug culture.

I don't see how this is a contentious point. You simply won't see the same level of binge drinking culture at Dartmouth vs. Columbia. That's a simply fact. That doesn't mean people aren't drinking. Its that the amount of binge-drinking and events that entirely revolve around drinking is different.

Yes, and there are social norms in all environments with people. Which behaviors are emulated/praised vs. looked down upon/stigmatized.

Enlightened discussants get this. There are tons of data to show wide variation between schools, and clear factors which are associated with SIGNIFICANTLY more binge drinking. It is a fact, not an opinion.

So, I think we can stop going in circles on this issue. Just ignore those spouting...misinformation.

Right. Maybe they shouldn't have dropped you off at a frat house and gone off to lunch.

reading comprehension
No, the reading comprehension award goes to YOU because nowhere in this thread are we talking about lecherous makes staring at 13 year olds. Hence the eye rolls you are receiving

new PP - I'd say there's a lack of intellectual comprehension for you, perhaps - there is a strong correlation between lecherous undergrads and heavy drinking culture.

Is the nasty PP on this thread a UVA grad married to a UVA grad with UVA undergrads for kids?

Once we hit page 4 in ANY thread on this sub, the conversation becomes foolishness. There should be an automatic thread lock at the end of page 3.

No, usually the are students from the rival institutions - VT or UMD - trolling for fun.

UVA would make fun of our rural roots ("All dirt roads lead to Tech" was a bumpersticker); Ours were "Virginia Tech: The University of Virginia", referring to the fact that we were more like aa typical state school.

With that said, every school has drinking. UVA, Tech, W &M, Stanford, MIT, ... And most schools have serious students.

With that said, my DD was turned off by UVA and its elitism...she fell in love with the more down to earth W & M and will be there next year.

LOL more like party hard and tell yourself you are working hard. UVa is very insular.

What about 17,000 undergraduates and 10,000 grad students from all 50 states and 100+ countries makes UVA "insular"? That's a new one. LOL

Actually that’s a great description of UVa. Uva is extremely insular. As for your post...maybe look up the word?

I know the word. I have a fourth year there. I just asked him. He said you are a UMD or Virginia Tech student trolling. He said UVA is not insular.

You had to ask your DS what insular meant?
Anonymous
It's only 5% international and mostly white overall. WVU and University of Iowa have more international students. Most students are from Virginia with +/- 1/3 from out of state. I suppose that is insular.
Anonymous
No one is going to have international students this fall.
