UVA - drinking culture?

I was a teetotaler that only drank when I turned 21 which was the end of my senior year. Still went to plenty of parties. Just have a solo cup in your hand and then no one cares.

I was non-Greek at UVA, as was my husband. We still drank a lot, at fraternity parties (which in my day were easy to get into if you we’re friends with a member) and other venues (the newspaper had a hard drinking culture when I was there). But I agree that the beauty of a big school is that you can find your scene. Your son will find his people.

Yeah, UVA is almost 17,000 undergrads, really shouldn't be difficult to find a group that drinks but not binge-drinks.

It's schools like Dartmouth (4,000 undergrads) and Washington & Lee (1200 undergrads) where 70% of the population is in Greek orgs and the school is in the middle of no where, that have heavy drinking/hazing cultures.

Also, girls need to travel in groups of at least 4. UVA really does have some hot spots like football games and fraternities that you should only attend with a group of like minded friends. The school does nothing to reign it in.

Sad and frightening.

Despite the fact that they have had more than one student murdered under these circumstances. And God knows how many raped.

Honest question: what race is your kid?

This is unironically the reason OP's son is worried.
At drinking-heavy universities, anyone that doesn't drink is considered a nerd, loser, etc. Schools have different culture, to say every school has a drinking culture is reductive and untrue, doesn't account for how bad the drinking culture is, etc.

Nerds are considered losers?? That’s news to me. The nerds I know invented things like computers, the internet, social media, etc. Heck, the richest men on earth are “nerds”.

THIS. The stories out of W&L are insane. Greek life is the only life and people often live far away from campus, so there’s a serious drinking and driving issue.

I would say that anyone who thinks Greek life is a big deal at UVA is not familiar with what it really looks like when Greeks rule the social scene.

Uva has a huge drinking culture. And yes they haze. Options. Self select out, hang with it. I know kids who have done both. Both are happy. You’re not forced to do it. IF you are the type that doesn’t want to do it but somehow does it to fit in - that’s the worst type of kid. Choose a side and stick to it

Only 35% of UVA is greek. And yes, greek life has a significant drinking culture. But 65% of the students aren't in sororities and fraternities.

College sexual assault statistics are massively overinflated. They conflate sexual touching on a dancefloor with rape, absurd.

Both my nephews came home from UVA with guts.

There is a simple solution here. Have you child enroll in the SEAS, rather than the school of arts and crafts. They won't have time for it.
