If your daycare or childcare provider closed due to coronavirus, are they still requiring you to pay

Do they not have small business insurances to kick in during time like this instead of making us continue to pay them??

I don’t think it works that way, also any of that would take time to process. I’m sure those departments are FLOODED right now with requests. It’s not realistic to expect any small (or micro) businesses will get relief anytime in the near future.

Why?
Insurance companies are quick to process a claim

Business expenses are not the responsibility of the parents. Parents are responsible for their kids. That's it

Business interruption insurance is related to physical loss or damage having to do with something like a hurricane or a flood. Most policies don't cover the current situation.

You’re confusing two different things. I don’t think daycare’s are expecting months of pay without service. But you’ll probably be expected to pay April. even if your child isn’t there. Even if you think that that’s not fair. Look at your contract. Shhhhhhh with the me me me me. Most of us are struggling financially with this.

Why is it more realistic to think that a business, who takes in money from many sources, would NOT be responsible for paying their workers and instead, the consumers of their service, who probably have only 2 streams of income, are responsible for paying for services not received??

That's crazy, IMO.

Businesses have more opportunities out there as far as sources of cash go.

If I had a kid in a daycare that closed, I would not pay for the time they were closed. If they wanted to cover their employee wages while closed, that is on them and should come from the businesses saved finances.

But that model is not realistic because most small businesses operate at a level of being two consecutive bad months away from closing. That is why I think we're on the cusp of another great depression.

Just because you pay during this shit down doesn’t mean the teachers will still be paid. Especially if this goes for 3-4 months. They will be laid off.

Checked our business interruption policy and it specifically excludes "loss or damage caused by or resulting from any virus, bacterium or other microorganism"

How do we know if teachers are being paid? Just email the director? If the teachers are being paid I’ll happily pay for up to two months during the shutdown. DH and I will continue to be paid ourselves during that time so we are in a position to make that choice, I certainly recognize all are not. If our beloved teacher isn’t being paid then I won’t feel nearly as generous!

I echo the sediment of many that parents should NOT be required to pay for services that are not rendered. I know this is sensitive given teacher pay but if you look at it objectively it should really be handled no differently than any other service provider. For example gyms are now closing and Many are saying they will not charge their customers during that time. I personally am on auto pay for my kids preschool. I have not heard from the administrator after emailing her twice asking what the plans are.

I am strongly considering canceling my auto pay. I think it will be much more difficult to try to get a refund, I’d rather have the leverage of not paying versus trying to recoup payment. For what it’s worth this is my kids last year there so they really can’t kick me out for next year. It is an unfortunate situation all around but I should not have to pay for a service I will not receive. Just like my clients are not going to pay me this month because I cannot provide service to them.

In addition to paying for my kids' (closed) preschool, I'm also continuing to pay my gym membership and my cleaning lady. As long as I'm getting paid, they're all getting paid. We are quite literally all in this together. And it is in my interest that all those business can continue to exist when this all passes.

If I stop getting paid by my employer, I'll obviously have to reevaluate the above. But for now those are just my regular bills that I pay every month, and that's not changing.

Don’t pay. This is going to go on for months.

I work for a non-profit daycare. We don't receive any state or federal funding whatsoever. We are not a 501(c)(3). As a result, our 35 employees do not qualify for unemployment even under the new Trump guidelines. All of our salaries and bills are paid from tuition. We have a waiting list a mile long. Yes, this whole Coronavirus situation is hard on everyone. However, all of our parents that are now working from home are still getting paid. Therefore, if they want to hold their child's sport and be guaranteed their child will have the same teacher when this is over, they will have to continue to pay. It would be different if parents weren't getting paid. Some families have faced a job loss through this. Those family won't have to pay during this time. We will do what we can to keep their spot. Unfortunately, we still have a business to run.

I agree with this PP, this is a good approach to take. If you are still being paid, then literally pay that forward and pay for the suspended services not being provided in this time of emergency: housecleaner, child care, gym. If you are NOT being paid, then you have a legitimate hardship and ethically it is OK not to pay anymore, but do give your service providers some notice on that if you can.
