ES: 37% of students in MCPS do not attend their closest school
MS: 45% of students in MCPS do not attend their closest school
HS: 38% of students in MCPS do not attend their closest school

That's CURRENTLY in MCPS.

Those are the boundaries that people want to maintain because they want "neighborhood schools."

How is this even possible? I call BS.
Kids who are bussed away from their closest school are special ed and magnet students, I'll give you that, but, looking at our catchment area, there's no way almost half of my child's middle school schoolmates live closer to another middle school. No way.

The consultants said those numbers include students in special programs, COSA etc. so not terribly accurate.

No. It says on the poster: "This portion of the analysis excludes students who do not go to their base school, including for magnet and choice programs."

Is there a video of the event anywhere?

For shame.

? why? what happened?

Parents behaving badly. Shouting, heckling, interrupting, booing, preventing the presenters from presenting.
People should be ashamed of themselves for behaving like this. What is everyone so afraid of?

When MCPS hold community meetings, they always make sure all attendees follow their carefully crafted questions and agenda. MCPS rarely allows Q&A session.
Last week at Gaithurberg HS, WXY did exastly the same. Parents were frastrated and wanted to get more information but WXY rep refused to answer any question.
Tonight, democracy prevailed. Parents got the microphne and were able to ask question or share their experiences. Hopefully MCPS will listen.
Boundary study for new school or reducing crowding is fine. Please don't not try to shift boundary for diversity. The rep at the meeting could give a straight answer on their definition of diversity!

Who is proposing to close Garrett Park ES?

Yep they are right on the line and good FARMS. redistricting them to einstein or wheaton is Low hanging fruit. Then of course the ES may close because everyone leaves town but that’s a problem for another day lol.

My daughter lives in there and at Thanksgiving she said they are worried. Their current HS is very overcrowded too.

MCPS will be reopening Woodward HS to relieve their current HS, among others. Garrett Park is likely to be reassigned there. Which is not the same thing as "being on the chopping block."

Yeah, along with Luxmanor and Farmland. Middle school is still Tilden.

Yeah, along with Luxmanor and Farmland. Middle school is still Tilden.

And that was the plan long before any 'boundary studies' came in the picture!

It's very common. Many people zoned for Gaithersburg and Forest Oak MS live closer to the other school. Same is true for Sligo and SSIMS. And Tilden and North Bethesda. Just look at the maps and it's easy to find examples all over the county.

More of an assumption than a plan. There of course won't be any plan until there's an actual boundary study.

Depends
Look at Coldspring ES for example.
Whole neighborhood is closer to Hoover MS and Churchill HS. Yet, it is in Cabin John MS/Wootton HS cluster. To add insult to the injury - some houses walkable to CES are in Beverly Farms boundaries, so instead of walking kids get bussed to school

Also consider roads as natural dividers. For example, you may be closer as the crow flies to an elementary school on the other side of 270 then your assigned school, but 270 seems like a natural divider for school boundaries, so it often is.

After upcountry moves...GP and Kensington Parkwood could shift easy to Einstein while OTES comes West to Woodward.

No I think OTES wealthy neighborhoods would also get shifted East to Kennedy. That’s the only way to shift non-FARMS to the places that need it but use adjacent clusters.

All the kids in Fallsgrove live closer to Wootton and Frost than most people in the Wootton cluster, but get bussed past those schools to Julius West and RM. Yes, bussing farther away already happens...
