MCPS Boundary Study Meeting Tonight (12/11) at Julius West @ 7pm

Last week at Gaithurberg HS, WXY did exastly the same. Parents were frastrated and wanted to get more information but WXY rep refused to answer any question.
Tonight, democracy prevailed. Parents got the microphne and were able to ask question or share their experiences. Hopefully MCPS will listen.
Boundary study for new school or reducing crowding is fine. Please don't not try to shift boundary for diversity. The rep at the meeting could give a straight answer on their definition of diversity!

We live closer to two high schools than the one we are assigned to.

I am baffled as to how people conclude this is about race. I saw some photos and videos, and the crowd at that meeting had many people of color speaking out. One in particular was an African American woman. It is hardly about race, but more about parents who want to keep their kids from getting on a bus for 30 minutes every morning. I agree boundaries need to be reviewed and "shifted," but the language crafted has put "diversity" as the priority...weighted more than proximity and other factors. That group of parents thinks diversity should be considered, but not be weighted more heavily than other factors. That would allow extreme bussing in the name of diversity. Everybody loses...especially the most disadvantaged people they are trying to help.

Because unfortunately, MCPS puts a hyper-focus on race. MCPS and the BOE put race in the center of everything.

I think the student activists are convinced that if you aren’t for their leader Matt Post’s plan, you are a segregationist. (Check Twitter.) There are other ways to do that than swapping out kids all over the county. The activists clearly wanted boundary change recommendations as part of this analysis and are angry they aren’t getting that.

I saw video of parents engaging in their own civil disobedience over government that apparently (1) failed to give proper notice and comment to the public before making a huge policy change (weighting demographics more heavily), and (2) failed to be transparent about what they were seeking in the analysis (asking for recommendations)

You may not like what these parents had to say, but BOE has to follow the rules. No exceptions to that in a democracy.

MCPS central office and BOE are the racists! Instead of using common sence to improve student learning, they divide students into different groups based on their skin color and the language they spoken or their ancestors spoken. They then divide FARM students again based on skin color.
There are so many very successful black, brown, and white Latinx in MC. Why don't MCPS bring these role models into its schools and show the students that they can do it? Motivation and high expectation could lift 30-50% the under performed students.

My kids are already being bussed to a school that is further than two closer schools. I don’t understand why you object to the boundaries being re-evaluated. For us this may result in a closer school.

Oh, I agree.

I think because it has proven to be incredibly challenging for MCPS to close the Achievement Gap. That has been their focus for years and they can’t succeed. MCPS is completely clear in its emails and press releases that it’s main concern is not educating kids. It’s main concern is race-based performance.

Shouting and booing at a public meeting - that's not civil disobedience. That's just parents behaving badly in public.

Who is proposing to close Garrett Park ES?

Yep they are right on the line and good FARMS. redistricting them to einstein or wheaton is Low hanging fruit. Then of course the ES may close because everyone leaves town but that’s a problem for another day lol.

My daughter lives in there and at Thanksgiving she said they are worried. Their current HS is very overcrowded too.

MCPS will be reopening Woodward HS to relieve their current HS, among others. Garrett Park is likely to be reassigned there. Which is not the same thing as "being on the chopping block."

Yeah, along with Luxmanor and Farmland. Middle school is still Tilden.

And that was the plan long before any 'boundary studies' came in the picture!

After upcountry moves...GP and Kensington Parkwood could shift easy to Einstein while OTES comes West to Woodward.

Yep that’s my guess. Will it be enough to turn Einstein around? Depends on how many parents bolt to privates I guess.

+1. Let them do their analysis. There could be helpful changes made to the existing boundaries and bus routes.

No, that’s civil disobedience. Are students the only ones who can engage in civil disobedience?

But he laid this plan in place, didn’t he?
