Who could possibly have anticipated this shocking and entirely unforeseeable plot twist? I, for one, am gobsmacked.

link doesn't work.

I hope the school expels the lying girl and her lying family.

Where are the calls to lock her up just like the ones for the innocent boys. Is this a hate crime

Not sure about that. 12 year old girl makes up implausible story to explain poor decision related to appearance is a very common thing. Grown-up reporter runs with same.....well, there is the problem right there. The reporter is the one who should bear the real consequences.

The reporter and any editor imvolved should be fired, at the very least.

And the NYT should hire a Public Editor again, right away.

The paper is losing all credibility.

It's lost it as far as I'm concerned. I've been reading the NYT for over 30 years, and it's become incredibly partisan, not just the editorial pages but the reporting as well. I also read the WSJ, and while their editorial page has an outspoken right-lean, their reporting has stayed clean as far as I can tell. I'm ready to cancel the NYT, except I feel like its important to see what they're saying, even as I realize how incredibly biased and irresponsible they are now.

We cancelled our decades-long NYT subscription last year, and frankly don't miss it at all.

I sometimes visit their site to see what they are talking about, and that's more than enough.

I think the Grandparents are to blame for jumping the gun and putting the girl in front of news cameras before adequate investigation. They were seeking 15 minutes of fame. It back fired.

All kids lie. The tween age is the most challenging. They should have thought about the consequences for the girl before putting her into the media.

But, why do they lie?

Because the New Hoax Times is on the market for divisive and sensationalist stories.

How many white 12 year olds do you know who use the word nappy? I think this is the first time I am using it and I am 40. The family was really quick to alert the news. Sounds reminiscent to the N word incident on a school bus at Frost middle school 1-2 years ago.

I know, I’m so sorry to say that the first thing that occurred to me in reading about this was that white people don’t know and use the word “nappy.” I would think especially white teenage boys would have no idea what this means. It did make me fear that whatever happened was not exactly as the girl recounted.

Tell me more white person. Explain how this black girl made this up. Go on. Share your wisdom about these matters.

Hi there! “White person” here. Since you asked, I am including a link to the Washington Post, which explains that “this black girl made this up.” I hope you have the honesty to admit that the skeptics about this story have been entirely vindicated.

+1, as soon as I read the article I knew the girl was lying.

Sigh, I wish they would stop putting kids under 18 on TV before stories have been investigated.
