Stokes sued for barring parent

This is a chicken and egg problem and bad behavior all along.

Schools says kid lied. Security camera says otherwise. Parent asks for the child to be evaluated and school doesn’t get it done in the legally required timeline. Then school bars mom from entering for the rest of the time the child will be there - which is an IDEA violation.

Both sides are escalating in a crazy way. Get a mediator. Move the discussion off site.

It looked to me that they were talking to the child and they got up to leave before the discussion was over.

Child abuse? No.

Child abuse? No.

Legal? No.
Did the school lie? Yes.

OP's linked article initially had the video (down where it says "to review the complaint, click here" there was another line/link that said "to watch the video, click here"). It appears to have been taken down.

This is the best summary of the issue I have seen! Parent escalates situation, school escalates situation. I give the parent a pass because they might think they are doing what is the best for their child, but school leaderships are professional and should have know better!

This is the dark under-belly of charter schools: they try to act like private schools and abdicate their responsibility to educate children with disabilities. I doubt Stokes is the first or the last.

And glad that WLC is taking a more aggressive approach. Five year ban, come on! I could understand even the remainder of the school year as a cooling-off period. But this is a naked attempt to get rid of people. Yes, at-risk families can be challenging. But charters need to do their share of the work. Not just send them back to their IB and carry on talking about how much DCPS sucks.

Dcps DOES IN FACT suck so there is that.

Sure it does, but it's galling how the charter sector loves to crap on DCPS while also sticking them with the hardest kids and parents.

You raise an excellent point.

And I also regret saying the word “sucks”. Dcps has let down my kids many times, but they’re trying. I guess.

No offense, but wouldn't dcps be 'stuck with' ALL the hard kids without charters? And then go back to what, paying privates like we used to? Maybe the answer is schools that focus on these issues- unfortunately some of the charters that try that get shut down for not meeting unrealistic progress expectations.

DC still send students to specialized private schools for kids with severe disabilities, but far fewer than it used to. It is wildly expensive. It also violates IDEA. Children who can be educated in a typical school, with supports (up to about 15 hours a week) , to either a designated public school for just SN kids or a private.

In the Stokes case they didn’t complete an evaluation in the 60-day timeframe so no one even knows the student’s needs.

To 5:50-charters educate a higher percentage of kids with disabilities than DCPS now, including kids with severe disabilities. Both sectors send kids to SN privates, but DCPS does more.

She should have pulled her kids out of the school immediately. I can only imagine how she acted to get banned from the school. It is not uncommon for Parents to be banned though. Stokes is a great school.

If someone treated my child like that I would have been incredibly angry, as any normal parents would. The only opportunists in this story are the people running this sham of a school.

If someone treated their child so bad, why didn’t they pull them from the school? This isn’t adding up...js

They didn't pull them because they don't have the options you have. What's not adding up is the school calling her kid a liar, then being proved wrong by the video, then releasing a statement calling her a liar again.

And what option is it that I’m supposed to have other than a lottery. Who says this parent is low income as it seems to be suggested?

Her address is on the complaint. She could be the exception but if you assume she is around the average income for a single-earner household in the neighborhood, then she would be low-income.

Apparently a Stokes staffer pushed a child and when the parent complained she was barred? Now I don't know *how* she complained but I could understand being pretty heated in this situation myself.

This lawsuit makes it sound as if Stokes is being run by abusive jailhouse wardens—not educators. If true, I wouldn’t send my dog to Stokes. This mother must not have any other school options.

That's very possible in DC where you have to literally win the lottery to get into a good school, and if this family lives EOTR they probably don't have even good enough neighborhood schools, let alone really good or average ones.

According to the address on the barring notice, they are zoned for Maury. They have options. Personally, if I felt the way this parent did and had concerns about mistreatment, I'd pull my kids out. The lawsuit is one thing, and I agree that advocating for your children is important, but if you truly feared the safety of your children, why "keep them in danger". Both sides may have mishandled the situation, but I see an opportunist on this parent's side.

But it’s pretty hard/impossible to get in Pk mid year in Maury.

Um, if you actually read the complaint, the complainant is NOT zoned for Maury. She's zoned for C.W. Harris E.S., Kelly Miller Middle School, and H.D. Woodson H.S.
